Oily sludge drip Breva 1100 TB

The Breva is running great, really been enjoying these warm spring days! ... Until it started raining :-/

I have a very specific leak
Can you advise how to address this




Here is the underside


Just the lower half of the spring


The discharge is thick and gritty
Is this oil getting into the TB and then picking up dust from incoming air?

Can you advise or point me to a thread that goes through this process?

I know nothing specific about Breva Throttle Bodies.  I hope Pete responds soon.  But, if the Breva TBs use Buna or similar rubber seals around the throttle pivot shafts you may be seeing the effects of ethanol in your fuel.

I also have a Breva 1100 and have this same situation, but only on the right side throttle body. The symptoms have been there for a few years and will take a while to reappear after I do a clean-up. I've just assumed its a slightly leaky seal and when a little gas gets by the seal it attracts some dirt/dust and then evaporates, leaving an oily film. Why its somewhat sporadic, I don't know. I haven't pinned down what riding conditions promote the leak. In any event it doesn't take much effort to clean it up and doesn't seem worth the larger effort to try and fix it.

When was the last time you took the drain plug out of the hose underneath the front of the Swingarm that comes from the airbox?

Where do you run your oil level in the engine? Do you try and keep it at the 'Full' mark?

Are you running something like a 'Fat Duc' or O2 'Optimiser' in line with your O2 sensor or air temp sensor?

I run my oil level just at halfway or a little below halfway between the low & high marks on the dipstick

no O2 or any other computer spoofer stuff at all

I run that drain tube open at all times, I took the plug out to drain it over a year ago and lost the plug  ;D


The stuff dripping is thick and gooey, not slick and oily. it is very black, almost a paste. Not more than a couple drops have seeped out, judging by the amount on the tranny

OK, all good.

I'd suggest pulling the tank and having a squizz in the air box. The only way you're going to get oily crap dripping out of the spindles is if excess is being blown out of the breather system and to get to the point of it dripping there would have to be substantial pooling in the box itself. Maybe the drain hose is kinked or blocked.

Only other thought is that maybe the rings have gummed up in their grooves somehow, perhaps over winter if there was a bit of fuel in the bores if the engine was started and didn't get fully warm it could of clagged them up. Take it out and flog the bejasus out of it and see if that helps.

Other than that the TB's will need to come off for a good cleaning otherwise the butterflies won't close properly and you'll get a high idle or, if you re-set the TPS, really crappy running due to the AFR going up the shit.

Oh relax boys. I do t know what exactly causes this drip, but it is common to big block breva's, and app were to be of no harm.   It shoes up about twice  season, I whipe it off and go ridding.

Take it out and flog the bejasus out of it and see if that helps.

This. Also, turning the ignition off and on without running the engine while trouble shooting will do it.

I believe it's what Pete Roper said. The airbox has got oil in it and is seeping into the throttle bodies.
Tank off and inspect airbox and it's hoses, also it will probably be worth removing the airbox and cleaning the throttle bodies too.
Without the drain bung the airbox is actually sucking unfiltered air into the engine through the tube and while doing this it is not draining the oil.

True Dave but when the bike is parked one would expect any accumulated oil to then drain if the line is un-kinked and free to empty any condensate from the airbox.

The ingress of unfiltered air isn't something I'd thought of but perhaps grot drawn up the hose had clogged the spigot on the airbox.

Long and short of it is it's time for the TB's to come off for a thorough cleaning anyway. They'll be filthy and that will have a negative effect on fueling and performance.

Cause it. I'm clueless, of course, but *assume* there is a little fuel leakage when the system pressurizes each time the key is turned on.

Uh? OK. Still weird.....

Second hand knowledge, but he had a leak on the bottom of the right throttle body that looked somewhat like that. He told me that it was from repeatedly turning the key off and on while he was fooling with it when I asked him about it. <shrug>
