1980 CX100 convert
« on: May 04, 2015, 10:14:24 AM »
I have a lead on a CX100 that a friend told me about in LA. Took a look at it about a week ago & it's in decent shape, but needs work.
Someone put some work into it to convert it to look like a LM1...primarily the headlight fairing, but it's clearly aftermarket.
It's also been painted...metallic red for some reason & is not guzzi red.

So trying to figure out what a good price for this would be.
He's asking $8500...which seems insane to me, but then again I'm used to buying vintage hondas and BMWs...not Guzzis.
LM1's are worth a crazy amount of money....but CX100s don't seem to have the same value.

The price includes a really good guzzi mechanic going over it and fixing any problems.

Thanks for any help!

Welcome to WG, and you're in the right place for info. I was out at Moto Guzzi Classics one afternoon when a guy brought in a *very* nice looking T3 based "LeMans" that was "burning and leaking some oil". He'd just given $6500 for it.. maybe a little high, but it *did* look nice. On closer examination, it still had the original chrome cylinders, they had flaked and gone through the engine. (!!) At that point, it was worth *maybe* $3500.

Needs some work. Aftermarket fairing. Doesn't sound very professional. I'm saying $3500 if you really want it, and are able to do the work yourself.
Edit:
One other thing.. when you say "Convert" on a Guzzi forum, people will think you are talking about a motorcycle with an automatic transmission. I assume it's *not* a convert conversion?  ;D

I thought the same as Chuck on the "Convert".  I'm curious who this "really good" mechanic might be??  The "really good" ones are few and far between it seems.  I'd get the name on that.  This bike is not original and that's what sells bikes like these at top dollar.
Best of luck.

Ah sorry, I'm new to Guzzis..thanks for the note on Convert :)
No, it's basically a CX100 with a few mods to make it look like a LM1.

The mechanic is someone I know directly and I'm friendly with...he's actually the one selling it.
He works out of a shop on the east coast & has extensive experience with LM1s and all Guzzis.
My guess is that someone bought it for him thinking it was an LM1, and he overpaid...and now he's trying to dump it without taking too much of a hit.

As I said to him I'm willing to take a bit of a $$ hit on it because he'll be flying out and working on it with me directly...but I also think the bike is worth around $4k tops as you guys seem to have backed up.

My # which I thought was very fair was $6k...mainly like I said to work with him...as I wrench a lot and learning directly from him is worth money to me.

Now that's what a real complete CX100 looks like w/a Corbin seat just like I have on my `81 CX100.   That is a real sport/tourer.  ;-T

I'll bet this CX odo should read 101,114 miles instead of 1,114, but the odo doesn't have another digit for that.  So this CX has no decals on the side covers, no crossover pipe, and after market mufflers.  Bet upon closer inspection it has some other issues too.  :)  But in todays market it does look better than other so called CX100s available.

A friend is looking for a CX100, I emailed him the eBay link.

Apparently the same bike was on Craig's List a year ago and my friend spoke to the seller, for a variety of reasons the sale did not go through.

Anyone know the history on this bike??

That CX has no side stand, and some aort of messed up/no crossover as ity has a car muffler clamp just forward of the shift lever. not saying it isn't worth it, but it is far from perfect

No, it isn't perfect. Missing badges on tank and the gas tank cover but it is worth the asking price.
