That's good - lots of good advice in there; my experience has taught me the same thing.   I'll bet the dealers on our list are saying "Yeah, that's right, that's right" about the long hours put in AFTER the shop closes ...

... He mentioned the great feeling you get when you do a good job on someone's bike, and they're happy with you and with it.

What about when you do the best job that can be done on someone's bike, but it costs more than their unreasonable expectation, and then something unrelated to what you did goes bad, and then they hate you and badmouth you up street and down alley and all on the Internet?     It's like the old saying "1000 'attaboys' are all cancelled out by one 'aw-sh!t' .... ".   That would be the part I would hate.

That's one of the reasons many franchise dealers will not work on old motorcycles.

Fix something, then something else breaks, and it must be the shop's fault.

I worked at a dealer who's owner allowed old bikes into the service department.

They were a never-ending source of headaches.

Now I know who that "parts is parts" guy in the `90s was in Philadelphia.   Sadly, he's not in this business any more.  Don't know what he does for a living now but occasionally he sells Guzzi parts on Ebay.

This story kind of reminds me of Dr. John Witner (dentist) who road raced Guzzis in AHRMA/AMA in the `90's. If not for him there never would have been the 2nd generation LeMans in early/latter 2000 or the Daytona 1000s w/ohc belt drive heads.
