1200 Sport Dash Issues Again
« on: June 05, 2015, 02:44:03 PM »
Haven't posted in a while, has anyone ever come up with a reason why 1200 Sport dashes go bad? Is it definitely due to water getting in somewhere? Is there a real way to prevent it? I've got over 10k on mine now and never had a problem, but I've never ridden it in the rain. Always take my other bike if there's a chance of rain. I'd like to take the Guzzi on a long tour this summer, but I just don't want to chance it. Kinda silly to have a "nice weather only" bike.

My Breva 1100 (same dash I would imagine) had 53,000 miles on it and had been through all types of precipitation.  The dash is still going strong as far as I know (with new owner now)...

I have a Breva dash Pete sent me to study, I know it's not the same but I am quite impressed by it. Stepper motors with a microprocessor so the clocks should be accurate.
The speed sensor at the back wheel is the weak link on the Breva, if your 1200 uses something similar I would definitely pull it off and apply silicone sealant over where the cable exits. Where you get a flexible wire emerging from hard epoxy it creates a perfect entry point for water, the epoxy doesn't bond to the wire so moisture wicks in shorting out the connections. A layer of silicone will make the cable entry nice and waterproof.
Pull the dash apart and seal up any points that look like they will allow water entry with silicone but leave a low point drain

I'm glad I'm not the only one who tries to avoid the rain for fear of spoiling the dash.  That said, I took the Breva for three days in Scotland last weekend - sometimes it felt like riding through a washing machine, but that caused us no problems; in fact, mine was the only one of the three bikes that worked flawlessly - the other two were Hondas; sometimes we worry too much.

When Carmo repaired my dash they stated water damage is what did it in. They made the necessary repairs and then said they put multiple layers of waterproofing in.

I'm a few years in with my repaired dash. I haven't changed my riding a habits so this still sees rain. This is the longest I've had a dash last to this point.

FWIW, the speedo sensor for the Breva bikes is not in the rear swing arm, that would be the Griso. I haven't heard of a problem with speedo sensors on the BNS12.
