Tonti Racers with mono shock conversions, thoughts
« on: June 09, 2015, 10:09:33 AM »
I'm building up my 75 Tonti, lower frame has been deleted but I did fabricate a center stand (I plan on running this on the street also)  It's buried deep in my head that I want to do a mono shock conversion, mostly because of success of Ed Millich's mono swingers.  There are several ways to build a brace, and Ed's solid plan of using a Duc 900s mono shock makes most sense to me.  The conversion swingeram I am building take a drum brake, yes, a drum brake.  My initial thoughts were to build a hoop that attaches to the shock mounts on the final drive, but looking at Ed's model, his looks pretty stout too.   I have a mono shock swingarm I'm gonna try to build this week, any ideas before I get started. (And yes, I've taken into account the angle of the shock)

note 1 1/2" bushing on shock mount, possible location for building the mono shock?

  raw canvis

Any ideas, thoughts, mistakes found, please don't hesitate.  I'm here to learn.   Of course shock mounting angle is incredibly important, I have a general idea but would like to stick with the Ducati 900SS style diagonal mount.
Cheers,
Nate

Unrelated question.
You don't have the bracing on top of the transmission?
Good judgement comes from experience.
And experience. That comes from poor judgement.

I do, it just looks different than most, if you look underneath the tank to transmission tunnel, I have an Ed Millich torque brace, and instead of a battery plate, I had a 1" thick piece of aluminum begging to replace the old flimsy hog holed tray.
The reason I'm using the center stand is that it also supports the transmission, but I would also like to drive to the meets without much fuss.

I don't know if the geometries are anywhere near close, but, have you considered a BMW Monolever?

It's annoying that this thread died and the bike still isn't done.. but damn this was looking promising and there are some great pics of the rail delete and bracing...

so what is the real advantage to a non-linked mono-shock setup? Other than possibly a little weight savings.

It's called a "cantilevered shock".  Not uncommon in the 1980s and 1990s.  Making a reappearance on streetbikes over the past few years.  Daytona, Sport 1100, Centauro, V11 Sport/LeMans all had cantilevered monoshock rear suspensions that worked well.

Probably no weight savings by the time you add the bracing to the swingarm.

More suspension travel would be one big advantage.

Then there is mass centralization and the benefits of a heavily braced swingarm.

If you float the bevel box, as on the spine-frame Guzzis, then you also eliminate torque reaction.

It's not mono-shocked but his plates & braces for the lower rail delete is all there

Yes Rocker59, I want to go that route for a simpler installation, and if I have to change things a few degrees it  shouldn't be a problem.  I've seen some pretty radical monoshockd racers, Buell is the first name to come to mind
