98 EV Metzler tire
« on: June 28, 2015, 06:01:14 PM »
I have a crazy question about a Metzler tire for my 98 EV. Got a coupon from Motorcycle Superstore and clicked the button for a 140/80X17. That part came out right but evidently I didn't see the small print about it being a front and not rear. Before sending it back for the rear tire I checked all the numbers and the only part different is the DOT #. One is DOT XE59 H242 and the other is DOT EB59 B938.
Load ratings, and all other marking are the same except the new tire is marked Front.

So what's the difference other than the word Front?
thanks

Check my post on a Calvin tire. I sent mine back and got the right tire. Now we know that they make a front tire the same size. A reply to my post said the tire worked for him on the rear but he only got 5000 miles out of the tire. I thought it was a pretty good price the way tires have skyrocketed and now I know why.

what bike uses a 140 front tire?

Almost all the big metric cruisers use something like a 140-70 x 17 these days ....

I sent it back. Guy at MC Superstore help desk says they sometimes have different plys and it may have to do with the way the rubber is laid on. It sounded good when he said it.

I guess I'm still finding it hard to believe that unlike car tires which you can (and should according to some folks) rotate, bike tires would be manufactured different for front and back and you couldn't use one for the other given size equality. there is a $50 price difference so maybe there is that much more rubber in the rear one! I'll ask Dave the next time I'm at Moto International.
Thanks

Your front wheel is resisting sliding out at speed, and the rear tire is pushing it forward. two different missions, that are more pronounced on a bike than a car.
