Mille parts questions, maybe other Tonti owners can help
« on: July 28, 2015, 08:01:02 AM »
I just installed $10 worth of velcro to keep my battery in place.  The PO had it wedged in place with foam scraps.  Its a slight improvement but at least I can ride until I make sense of the battery securing strap.  Is there a parts diagram of the battery strap assembly?  It looks like the strap is 2 pieces.  Bolted in place on the motor side maybe?  Seems odd as thats where the battery ground is .  I cant tell how the other wheel side is secured.  The battery tray seems to have rolled tabs where a rod would fit.  I do not have the rod and cant seem to find any pictures of it.  Can anyone describe how the wheel side of the battery strap is secured in place?

My handlebar clamp looks cheesy and has even chipped off on the corner.  I was hoping it was a cover for the real clamp but its a cast piece with GUZZI engraved on it.  Do you know of a replacement piece that is CNC'd or milled?  The clamp secures the dash but I plan on scrapping the dashboard gauge cluster very soon since its fallen apart.  The gauges also need rebuilding. The speedo glass has little cracks in it.  I was going to go with the mgcycles gauge assembly and led's.

Thanks guys, i'm making slow progress and the bike runs like a top now.

Do you have the straps?
I just did this on mine - you have to loosen the battery tray and lift it a little to get the front one in.
$25 for the straps ouch. Oh well the old ones lasted 38 years !

Here's how my battery is held in place

Mine didn't come with any of the stock battery mounting parts, so I used foam rubber to fill the extra space I got by using a small AGM battery, and inner tube rubber straps with hooks made from welding rod to keep it in place.

Cool, how do the straps attach in the back?  Is there a rod that fits into the loops in the battery tray?

I dont mind paying for the straps.  I'm happy to support vendors like MGCycles.  Try finding a battery strap for a 1955 Moto Morini GT or an old Falcone/Aerone...

I use a Die Hard Gold that fits solid tight without straps in my Mille. It takes up every bit of  space. In fact I have to hit it with a spray lube when dropping the battery in place. It is a 340cc amp battery for $55.

Toby, I have one strap for the Mille, assuming it's the correct one for that bike. I'll find it tomorrow, and send it too you for the price of s&h if you want.
I think you're going to find though that the strap needed is dependent upon the physical dimensions of the battery itself; even Redrider90 here says he had a large battery that barely fit in the space available for his own Mille.

The battery you have should be an Odyssey 680, as I've used them in all of my bikes.

Steve, i'll take that strap if its in decent shape.  I'll have to fab something up to keep the battery in place under it.  Thanks for the offer.

Toby, I'm sorry man, but I can't seem to put my hands on that battery strap.
That's what happens whenever I decide to "straighten things up", then can't find sh*t afterwards.

I'll holler if I locate it, which I no doubt will, but in the meantime, you'll need to use another method on strapping down the battery.
Your ideas may be better in the long run anyway

Parts diagram: 37 is the front strap and 38 is the rear.

The front strap attaches at two bolts/studs holding the battery tray to the transmission.

The rectangular loop of rear strap attaches under the "rolled tab".
