Need advice fixing an oil leak
« on: July 07, 2015, 06:39:42 AM »
Seem to have developed a pretty good leak some where near the arrow.  All messy around there so can't tell exactly where it is coming from.  Has that nice smell of gear lube not motor oil.  I have a suspicion that its coming from the back of the tranny.  How hard is it to replace that seal?  Please don't tell me I have to pull the engine again.

it's PROBABLY...hopefull y, the clutch push rod seal.

And you wont have to remove the engine.....as long as you can tilt the bike verticle on it's front end.

Otherwise, yeah, at least the tranny needs to come out.

Here's a link to the moto International kit, if its still available.

Probably the u-joint boot.
Probably need to pull the swingarm at least.

I should add that if I take a short ride I don't see the leak.  If I ride more than 50 miles I'll notice the leak once it's parked.  It will make a puddle about 4" in diameter then stop leaking.  Thinking I might just have to life with it until I get back from South Dakota.

Wouldn't be the clutch pushrod seal(s) - if that/they was/were leaking, oil would be dripping from the weep hole at the bottom of the bellhousing area.

Most likely it's the o-ring on the outer body of the throw-out bearing, or a cracked u-joint boot. The o-ring can be replaced by detaching the clutch cable, removing the cotter pin securing the clutch arm pivot pin, removing the clutch arm pivot pin and clutch arm. Then you can grab the outer body with pliers and pull it out of the transmission. Replace the o-ring and "reassembly is the reverse of disassembly".

To replace the u-joint boot with the proper one-piece boot will require the swingarm be removed.

If you are going to ride for a while, please check the oil level in the gearbox first.
