95 Carby Cali Tacho/Rev Counter Dead

Went for a long ride the other day and when I left the Tacho was working and half way round it decided not to!

I know that its likely to be the Tacho itself somewhere internally but can I check the trigger signal to eliminate that first?

I have basic tools including a multimeter

Ignoring the lamp check it has +12 Volts and a good ground.
The pulse from the electronic module is a bit harder to check, just make sure it's intact, you may get some sort of a signal you can measure perhaps on AC range.
The Lead counterweight sometimes falls off the movement, that happened to my EV, see if it rattles.
I glued mine back with JB weld.

I assume if the counter weight has dropped off it flies about randomly.

Mine sits at the 500 RPM point (as it does when the engine isn't running  ) jiggling about an bit as the bike goes over bumps in the road

Yes, without the counterweight mine went to mid scale and moved from mid to 3/4 scale.

My brother Kiwikev found the coil on his had gone open, he was able to re-attach with great difficulty.

Hopefully yours is something simple, any other symptoms like the lamp gone out, Idiot lights out?
