cylinder head temp ngc

Since I did the top end on my Yamaha 88 XT350 it has been running on the lean side where before I had a nice tan plug now it is white. So after a ride this afternoon I took a reading with my IR thermometer and got a reading of 325 off the side of the cylinder under the valve cover ouch I thought it was running hot. My Buell with it's motor buried in the frame was around 225, so is this to hot. Seems so to me. Fresh oil.
I want to richen it up by shimming to needle, but when I opened the carb, man there is a lot of stuff in there! A bell crank comes in from the side for the slide. KInd of put me off.
