Question about my 01 EV
« on: August 11, 2015, 06:59:27 PM »
I went for a ride today and noticed something I had never seen or payed attention to. It's on the right cylinder just below the oil lines. Opposite side of the spark plug. I'm guessing it's an engine temperature sensor. It feels loose, or is that just similar to a plug cap that fits over the sensor? It also has an electrical plug similar to the fuel injectors. I don't want to mess with it until I know what it is. Sorry I don't have pictures. One of these days I will figure out how to post pics. Thanks.

You have it ID'd.

It should not be loose feeling.  If its loose it won't relay a good signal to the ECU, which affects fueling.  Be careful making it tight.  If it's the plastic one it can break.  There should also be some heat sink compound 'packed' behind the mount piece to help heat transfer to the sensor.  Tighten slowly to compress/remove air or it will feel tight and still be loose.

It's probably already broken.  I found a proper brass one last year from one of the usual sources. Don't remember which.

Today I removed the sensor holder and the plastic sleeve came out in three pieces. I then removed the brass base. I assembled the three pieces back on to the base and wrapped some electrical glass tape around it. Reinserted the sensor and the bike starts and runs great. That sensor affects fueling more than I thought it would. I sourced a new sensor holder and was pleasantly surprised that it was only $15. Should be here by Friday. Thanks for the quick replies and tips.

If you got the brass holder that's a really good price.  If you got the plastic one you'll be facing the same problem again.

From what information I gathered the brass holder would be for the oil pressure sensor. Maybe there is a good reason the temp sensor is in a plastic sleeve. Regardless, the first one lasted 98,000 miles. If a new one lasts at least half as long I'll be happy. Now, if I can screw it in tight using the base hex, that would be better than screwing it in by the plastic sleeve. Maybe I can squeeze a crow foot socket down there. Or, I can just bend a wrench to fit.

There is a brass sensor mount thingy that upgrades the plastic one.  It looks like that thing Uhura stuck in her ear on star trek.
