Guzi V50 iii play in gearbox coupling
« on: August 19, 2015, 03:40:58 AM »
Hi, Is the play you can see in the vide excessive or typical ?

https://youtu.be/3m-epOdcwm4

I guess the question is do I need to open it up and change the... bearing ?

Thanks

There is no ball or roller bearing on that shaft, it simple bears on the case. There is an oring in there, if I recall correctly, to prevent oil escaping. If it is shifting properly and not leaking then do not worry about it. If you need to dis-assemble the gearbox for some other reason then you might repair that also.

Seems like a lot to me. <shrug> At the very least, I'd think it would be puking oil like a buzzard..

That can't be good.  Looks like a lot of motion to me.  Yeah... a little surprised we're not seeing a lot of oil.

Checked the V50 and Monza and spare Monza gearbox. Plenty of slop in the shift linkage (ees normale…) but no play for that shaft. If I'm reading the parts diagram correctly, the shaft is part of the "preselection assembly" 19 23 62 00 that actuates the shift drum. There is a bushing, presumably fitting into the gearbox housing. I don't see how the bushing could be that worn, or the shaft of the preselector for that matter. Is there oil in the gearbox now? Oil level shouldn't be that high but it will get thrown around inside (and puked out the breather…).

The bike was a non runner so no idea if it was leaking etc, all the oil is drained out now...

Ummm, wondering if I should strip it now, of course I'd rather not...

You'd better… there should be threads on that around here. Basically, the way you get the gearbox out of a smallblock Guzzi is to first remove everything that isn't a gearbox   How many miles and what shape are the valves in? Stretchy exhaust valves are not just found in Larios, I speak from experience here. V50 III is a lovely and fun bike but like most things Italian, especially of those days, it needs to be properly assembled first. How many miles on this one? All the ugly things show up over 20k.

I checked and there no shaft play in the V50 Monza I have here. The video doesn't look good. You might post on the small block forum too.

Normally, what is called a "running fit" is somewhere around .002". That looks like maybe .020" or so. Something is seriously worn..

It's done 36k, I'll take the gearbox down but probably won't take the engine apart unless I have to - unless someone says I really should check x,y,z while I'm there...

There is a gearbox on ebay here in the UK from a v50iii for £125, I'm wondering if I should get that and swap it. Il, check how many miles on it.

Thanks...

If it is in good shape, that would be your best option, IMHO.

I second what Chuck said. Best case, you have a working transmission. Worst case, spares and could get one out of all of the parts. Also, with 36k -- miles or km -- on it, vigilantly and obsessively check valve clearances once it's running. When my Monza exhausts started to stretch, they'd go from .008 in to .004 in 500 miles or less... which meant in 1000 miles, $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Then there's the rear drive pinion bearing oiling or lack thereof. And random quality control...

ok, I'm going to take the heads and barrels off as well
as they need to be cleaned up.

So far on the list of things to check-
- length of exhaust valves
- check or change? the rear drive pinion bearing

Any more while I'm in there?

You need to do the oil hole to the pinion bearing mod, and get rid of the plates under the crown wheel and add Schnoor washers. I prefer the 3 piece ones.. they'll never come loose. I did a tutorial here at one time. I'll see if I can find it.

Edit: Ok, here ya go..
