Help- Mysterious Service! light

Hey there- so, I started up the 1200 S and the Service! warning came on. I cycled the ignition and it turned off. Went on a trip- and it turned back on- was lit the whole way home. I turned the bike back on- and it had turned off. I checked the diagnostics and found no active service codes.  I seem to recall the same warnings before the immobilizer switch crapped out.

Any thoughts?

My 1200 Sport has a similar condition ...... on occasion when I first turn on the ignition switch, the Service message comes on.  I start the bike, then immediately turn it off, and turn on the ignition again. Usually the Service light doesn't come on after the brief start-up, so I hit the starter button and things are good for the rest of the ride.  My thought is that the oil pressure sensor might be hanging up, and the ECU senses that there is a problem with the sensor.  The brief startup (with Service screen lit) may be causing the sensor to return to its 'good' mode.  Of course, I could be way off on my analysis of the problem.  In my particular situation, I'm not losing a bunch of sleep over it, since the SERVICE message comes on before starting the engine.  Seems more like a pre-flight sensor check.  YMMV.

Not quite sure I know what you mean, Pete. There were no active codes stored in the dash diagnostics.

ECU faults are simply listed as either active or inactive. With dashboard errors which covers things like oil pressure there are two columns, active and memorised.

  It warns you that it is time to pay some money to a service department at the dealer so they can turn it off for a period of time.

John, just to clarify. Are you getting a message that says 'SERVICE!' In big letters at the bottom of the dash or simply the red triangle in the top right(? From memory.) corner of the screen?

I DO have the big scary SERVICE warning on the screen.

I do have some dash errors in Mem. I remember seeing them when my immobilizer died. It was my understanding that if the error is no longer "active", it is not an ongining problem. I can and will look up these mem errors if you think they are pertinent to the current issue.

Mine was the wire that hooked to the oil sensor from factory was to flimsy, put a better end on it and the problem went away, till the oil sensor went bad, finally found one and replaced it and have not had a issue since Good luck finding a oil sensor for the 2v 1200 sport, if you find some let me know

I'd bet the connector to the oil sensor is loose/corroded, or the sensor is in the process of failing. As Pete mentioned, check for memorized errors in the dashboard error section of the diagnostics. If you make a contribution to the forum, I can send you a nifty little kit to deal with the oil sensor wiring problem, which is useful for either the old style sensor or the new ones. It allows use of either sensor, and replaces the old boot connector that has caused many of us problems.
