Cali 1400 clanks at idle
« on: August 27, 2015, 05:59:47 PM »
My new California 1400 exhibits a noticeable irregular metallic clanking noise while idling. No odd sound any other time. Is this cause for concern?

Nothing external loose that I can detect. Sounds like it comes from the bottom end.

Broken rubber engine mount?

Inside the crankcase? Use a big screwdriver & put your ear to the plastic handle then place end on block.

Congrats on the Cali 14 .............. If its a hi pitched tinny sound its probably the exhaust heat shields ( the ones that pass under the passenger pegs ) when its idling and making the noises you state put some pressure with your fingers downward on each one and see if you can change the pitch or halt it all together. I shimmed and moved mine with a hi heat pad the size of dime over a year ago .......... quiet as a mouse ever since.

Let us know what it ends up being at any rate...............

Ciao.

It's dead, Jim.

I'll come pick it up to save you the disposal fees.  Please have the clear title signed off and ready to go, and a full tank of gas.  Act soon -- I can't make this offer forever.   :thumb:

Carefully check the welds and gussets on the crossover.  It can crack and not be readily apparent with just a casual inspection.  Guzzitech has a replacement for a couple hundred bucks

iF YOU HAVE A RUBBER MALLET TAP ON THE THE EXHAUST AND YOU WILL PROBABLY FIND IT!  LOOSEN UP AND RE TIGHTEN THE EXHAUST SHIELDS AND CROSSOVER BOLTS AS NECESSARY.

It was in fact an exhaust hardware issue. And to think I was about to sign the title over to Rodekyll....

There was a service bulletin to dealers on the exhaust and heat shields making noise.

But I'm sure Rodekyll would be happy to provide extended testing to ensure you are satisfied with the fix...
