What a difference!

Just had the first service done on my 2013 V7 stone by the guys at GP Motorcycle in San Diego.  Wow, its almost a different bike.  Before the service the low speed behavior was jerky, some here call it 'snatchy'.  And the power delivery wasn't the smoothest.  After the service the low speed behavior and power delivery is much smoother... granted, it is still full of character and isn't a Japanese inline 4 kind of smooth... but a much more pleasant ride than it already was. 

I bought the bike largely based on what folks here say about it.  And everything is true... its a great bike and keeps getting better and better. 

I've read some 'long-term' reviews by magazine writers and leave you scratching your head... they like the bike then they don't like it... really wishy washy reviews.  Seems the writer/reviewers just didn't wait long enough, especially after the first service, to understand the evolving character of the V7.  Glad I listened to folks on this forum.  The V7 is fast becoming my favorite motorcycle.

Yeah, first service is pretty extensive.  Tranny, motor, and shaft-drive are drained and new respective oils added.  Cables are checked and adjusted, everything gets a once-over and tightening.  And the head bolts are torqued to spec, and valves adjusted.  It really does improve the bike.  At least one Wild Guzzi forum member did his own service and wrote up a rather extensive how-to.  With the proper tools and work space, it appears very doable... That said, I'm fortunate to live near a very reputable MG dealer and let them do the service.  I'll likely take it from here, doing all the maintenance according to schedule.

If I had to take a wild guess.

They still aren't putting the latest maps in these things from the factory and they upload the new one at the first service.

If that's actually true (and it's a swag, but why would much newer bikes like Cam's have benefited from the stock remap otherwise), then either:

1. It's a plot to get around the EPA by installing the better map later.
2. It's an ingenious plot to make their dealers look like miracle workers at the first service.

Or most likely

3. The lazy bastards haven't gotten around to updating the factory software.


And considering my dash is forever programmed to the wrong maintenance intervals... I'm only half kidding about #3.

HA!  I think I remember the mechanic/tech saying something about a 'reflash'.  Kev m, nice one.  And nice write up on how to do the service/maintenance.  I'm definitely not mechanically inclined.  But I'll be using your write-up to do maintenance in the future.  Anyway, the V7 has improved quite noticeably after the first service.

Can't say he balanced the throttle bodies - gotta be nice to skip that!

Maybe as simple as found a vacuum leak just the same?

 I guarantee they updated your EFI map. I just had mine done with similarly great results.
