I saw that and wondered what happened.  Blown tire maybe?   The "falling asleep" scenario doesn't seem likely, although I know that young guys often push themselves on no sleep and depending on Red Bull and caffeine to operate.

Sometimes I'm looking at the scenery and find myself looking back at the road and am headed for the guardrail.   Easy to happen in scenic areas.

 One of those cases where we might never know what happened . A friend of mine , 21 at the time , simply died on his MC , the wreck that resulted was not very bad , just a slow down and fall over . Sad to hear that one so young is lost .

But now, at least, she gets 10 years at the Big House, and not just a "failure to yield" fine and 4 points on her license.

People complain about how many Americans are in prisons, but what are you going to do with people like this OTHER THAN put them in jail so they can't kill again?

For her, it's warranted. The overcrowding comes from minor, non-violent drug offenses and the elimination of judicial discretion through mandatory minimums and '3-strikes, you're out'. Let out some of the teens who got popped with a lid, and keep some of her type in their place...

We solve prison crowding by using the prisons for the folks who need it.  The kid caught with a joint doesn't need it.  The homeless guy sleeping on the sidewalk doesn't need it.  Wall street execs who prey on your retirement do.  People who kill other people do.  Every time a jurisdiction decriminalizes victimless 'crimes' we free up space for the more deserving.

Well, I always figure the best way to honor the memory of those who have been killed on the road is to figure out what to do to make sure it doesn't happen to the NEXT two guys .... ?    Otherwise, they sort of died in vain.    But if the rest of us can learn from it ...

I guess it could be argued that if this woman had been put in jail for being an irresponsible drug addict BEFORE she killed these two guys, the two guys would still be alive.   

Might not matter much to us, but sure would matter to them and their families?   Saying "Let's wait till they kill someone and THEN do something about it" seems reactive rather than proactive?

We lost a 27 YO man and his pregnant wife here last week. Real nice kids, well thought of. I was told the driver of the pickup that pulled directly out in front of them was visibly upset at the scene, because they could have killed him. No helmets. She was airlifted and on life support, they pulled the plug.....

The father of a co-worker was killed on his motorcycle here Thursday. A distracted driver crossed the centerline and took him out according to our local newspaper.

I read all the local Chicago-area 'motorcyclist killed' articles, not out of ghoulish interest but to see if I can learn anything from the circumstances of the accident.

And this summer, my lesson learned is: don't ride between 11 pm and 5 am. Seems like alcohol, helmets, experience, etc aren't always factors, but time of day is consistent.

Not sure what happened exactly in this incident but I read that service men being injured or killed on a bike while on leave is a significant issue the military is addressing.  Last I heard there was special rider training being provided and maybe a few other incentives as well.  Guys get home, wanna blow off some steam or get some kicks - who can much blame them - and a bike is nearby.

Service men seem to be in a special class of stupid when it comes to motorcycles.  Like the only thing in their brain is that scene from TOP GUN . . .

Service man dead on his way to the base in Fairbanks.  Lost it in a curve doing ~2x the posted limit.  No helmet or gear.  Guys at the gatehouse say he'd pull off at he guard post, put on his required gear, and proceed on to work.  At the end of his shift he'd pull off in the same place and remove the gear before heading off into traffic.

The part I feel bad about is that my tax dollars went into his feed and training.  The part I feel good about is that he didn't saddle some cage driver with a lifetime of guilt for his need to 'stick it to the man.'
