GREAT STELVIO TANK BAG?
« on: September 03, 2015, 01:23:51 PM »
Is there an ideal tankbag for the Stelvio?  Some desirable features would be:  Solid Mounting; Easy On-Off; Ready Access to Fuel Filler; Waterproof; Adequate Capacity - whatever that is...

I have a Wolfman Rainier on mine.  It's well made, stable, and plenty large.  No strap-on bag is going to be as convenient as a magnetic bag, but fuel stops are easy enough.  It's water-resistant; they sell a raincover that I haven't bothered with yet.  Wolfman's Expedition line is waterproof, but more fussy to live with, IMHO.

You can also look at the SW-Motech BagsConnection items at Twisted Throttle. They do have an adapter that will work on the Stelvio - I installed mine last night so I could use this : http://www.twistedthrottle.com/bags-connection-gs-evo-quick-lock-tankbag-for-sw-motech-gascap-mounting-system - though I have an older version I used on my Tiger. Fits great, and is very easy on\off for fueling.

There is a dedicated Tankbag for the Stelvio.  You can get one from Agostini.  It has a tank bra that attaches to the neck and tank bolt.  It holds the large multi-pocket tank bag with quick releases or a small "man-purse" that would hold like wallet, cell phone, etc.  Comes with a rain cover.  Don't have any pics of the mini-bag, but it's maybe 3"x6" by 2" or so thick.  Snaps onto the tank bra when the big bag is not present.

What John said.

That is a great tankbag.  You can fill the tank with the bag in place by simply releasing the rear latch, lift the bag and fill up.

Best,

I have and like very much, the SW Motech bag.  I like how it mounts and doesn't touch the paint.  It comes off in about .2 seconds and goes back on in about .3 seconds, which is really nice.

You could try Bagster, they make on specifically for your bike (I think)

I brought the dedicated bag and I'm not happy with it because:

1. I had to improvise sideways straps on the underneath "tank bra" because it is only anchored at the ends and no matter what the bag would move from side to side and would almost certainly leave on the marks on the paintwork over time.
2. The map pocket is almost useless due to its oval shape and the access being underneath and it the middle. I had to adapt the SW Motech map pocket that I had over the top because it is sensibly square so you can fold any map and slide just slide it in.
3. I've had a Motech bag on my other bike for 8 years and have found it to be a brilliant system for reasons that  tarsky68 has already outlined.
4. I have my doubts about the longevity of the ratchet at the back of the bag and must be used at every fuel stop.
5. It (the dedicated bag) looks huge but belies its promise in my opinion though they may all be like that due to the sudden drop of the tank.

The Motech system is brilliant and obviously I wish I had gone for that.

Sure is nice not to have to stop and fool with a rain cover that also takes up space when stored.

Giant Loop and Wolfman make waterproof (resistant) bags.

An electrified tank bag sounds like a great idea.

You folks with SW-Motech BagsConnection bags, which bag do you have on your Stelvio?

Do you have any pics?

Thanks!

Dittos on my experience with the MG bag.  I solved it on mine by applying some "GOOP" brand adhesive to the underside of the bra just adjacent to both sides of the fuel filler.  Locked it down immovable.  It would peel off if I worked it slowly, as it's just a "rubber cement on steroids" I haven't removed it since I put it on 6 years ago, and it hasn't budged.  I agree design would have been better if it had better grip in the top radiused surface of the tank, but I think they were trying to avoid covering up the nearly useless "glove compartment? in the right tank housing.  I've been happy with mine otherwise.
You do lose a fair bit of volume in the bag due to the very high dome contour of the tank.  Not sure how to avoid that without perching a taller bag precariously on top of the curve, with no side support.

As always, YMMV
