1984 v65c
« on: August 31, 2015, 05:31:40 PM »
Hi I am new to the forum so please correct me if I go a bit stray.
Details
Just bought a 1984 v65c imported from the states now in the UK.
As it has been a few years since ridding, (3 decades) I have a problem with the running. Whilst the bike has only 28k miles but has been used small mileage over the years have invoices to show. 1st time staring took some work re set idle, cable and mixture and running ok but felt a bit lumpy.
Now just taken for a blast and at 4500 the engine looses power, in fact one hill struggled to get up. Got home checked over could not find any thing next day same thing at higher revs in  3rd, 4th, and 5t.
Can any one throw some light on this. As the bike was USA spec I wonder if main jet and needle need to be changed?
Timming is dyna s, plugs colouring seem ok but did notice right  side ( looking forwards) was a bit wet with fuel.
All oils, been replaced and air filter, new fuel I am at loss.

I'm venturing a foolish question here - is it the engine or is the clutch slipping?
That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.

I'm betting the advance mechanism is sticking and won't let it advance. Cleaning and lubing it once a year is a normal maintenance chore.

Welcome! Pics of this wonderful machine? We had this issue with mine but we were playing with new air filters and exhaust. Are the pipes clear? Getting good exhaust flow? Wonder if it could be the coils? The green coils that dad put on my bike decades ago turned out to not be the right ones.

:1: on the mechanical advancer system.  Mark the Dyna mount plate before removal and you won't need to reset the timing when you reinstall.  The central rotor has to turn very freely and move the spring-loaded weights.  Gets all gummed up.  Careful!  Mark or photo everything.  The rotor can be installed on the weights in two different positions.  Only one position will run the bike so you have to re-install correctly.

Also, are you using any vacuum tool to balance and synchronize the two throttles?

We also have a separate, active forum specific to the small block Guzzi design.  Over on Yahoo Groups:

Thanks everyone for your replays.
I will check out the advance and lube up.
I don't have a vacuum tool for the carbs but when I checked the cables were very slack I adjusted to 1.5 mm as per manual.
I set the carbs as best I could but sight sound and exhaust feel ( had done it this way years ago with Honda twin ).

Hi Russ: the USA specifications used 264T atomizers in the carburetors.  The euro spec 268t atomizer makes a noticeable difference from mid range and up.

This is the first thing I would check.

Thanks dick Carey I will source the 268t atomiser.
Just need to find out correct needle, according to the guzzi manual the v65 uses a x6 on second notch

check what Chuck said.
Had a Monza, same thing burnt the valves out.
Fix before the $ needs to be spent.

Further update.... Plugs ok but spark looked weak. Bought new coils to fit in. Carbs left at present but will be getting balanced soon.
Main issue after borrowing a strobe light, I could not believe how much retarded the dyna S ignition was set. As I was about to raise revs tachometer inner cable snapped. So engine had been run and well warmed, reset timining as best I could will re check when new tacho cable arrives. And set a higher base line and re check and adjust timing.
Now advanced also checked and lubed the advance as suggested. The engine is running better on a 15 mile run but will see how it goes after further tweaks. Many thanks for all your guidance avenues.

Check oil before every ride.  Not much reserve.  Hopefully you're not too heavy of a rider.
