I personally use a 6-6-1 MX padded chest protector + the padding in my textile or leather jackets for upper body protection on most long bike trips. When it's hot just having the zipper open as needed keeps me sufficiently comfortable + a water bag to sip on as needed.

:1: on the sixsixone stuff. I've been using one of their 'core protectors' for several years. They list it as 'bike' gear (bicycle), and I use it for that, but it also works well for me for moto.
