IF you are anything like me the cold weather last week into the last weekend had me thinking it may be time to store the bike. But wait !!!! Not so soon. Check this link to an Accuweather report:

The first time that I remembered El Nino becoming a topic of national conversation we had a mild (even balmy at times) winter and a warm dry spring followed by a hot early summer. That was 12-13 years ago, we are due for a repeat. The motorcycle season is not done!

Seriously, forecasts may be right (or not). We've had a wetter and warmer summer than usual. Ocean temps on the high side - and the sport fish have been further North. All indicators of the El Nino effect.

We desperately need the rain and the snowpack in the Sierra Nevadas in California - but hopefully not all at once. How'd you like to be on a motorcycle during one of these epic mudslides:

Looks like they are predicting wet but less snow. I remember the last big El Nino when much of Sacramento and south of that was under water. Not nice. We might be in for some big mudslides though. Those areas hit hard by fires are hilly, the ground dry to great depths and the water just runs off.

Riding weather is great though and should be until late December in California. The water sports dealers are hoping though, reservoirs will fill up and everyone will want a jet ski or boat. Right now is the best time of year, cooling down with bright blue sky and cheap gas.

Forget El Nino!
South Texas has been flooding since the Spring. Houston has been underwater, and rivers out of their banks. People have died in high water on the freeways. Houses have washed away killing the families sheltering inside.

Happy you'll get in a few extra rides. It's been a nightmare here.

It's a kneeslapper that the areas with the most climate change denyers are also the areas hardest hit by the effects.

I lived in San Diego during the last big El Nino from around November of 97 through the spring of 98. I lived in San Diego for 30 years and had never seen that much rain fall there. I think the total rainfall for that year turned out to be over 22 inches and the normal rainfall in SD is around eight inches a year. I'm originally from upstate South Carolina and had never seen as much rain as the El Nino brought to CA. The good is that it helped a lot with replenishing the water in lakes, etc BUT the downside was the flooding and mud slides. The soil could only absorb so much water so floods in certain areas became a common thing and some areas saw homes slide right off of the hillsides. We moved out of CA in 2005 and won't have to deal with it again but I hope that the El NIno isn't as bad as they're predicting or it's going to be a real problem.

With all of the excess labor being let go from the Oil Industry, it's a pity they are not building a pipeline from Texas to California for all the extra water we had a few months ago. Unfortunately, most of it went underground or ran into the ocean...and now even some counties are back in drought conditions.

Well motorcycle season for me is any temp that riding will not induce hypothermia and the road is not loaded with salt dust.

Indeed, for me motorcycle season is just getting started here in So Ca. The summer heat makes it miserable (unless I ride in SD ) but I enjoy trips out to the desert and now its finally getting doable again. Hope we get the rain we so desperately need, just pack your rain gear.

Excuse me I know it may be totally selfish but I don't live in Texas, AZ or California so I could care less, probably like the people from the southwest could care less when we have a month of below freezing temps and nights in the single digits. We have had rough couple of years back east and far below normal temps.

There have already been a record number of huge storms in the Pacific basin, just damn lucky they aren't slamming land masses. There a big one out there right now. El Nino indeed. While all the flooding and such is very bad, I'm hard pressed to believe it's not better than the droughts that were about to put many populations out of business, so to speak.

El Nino 1998 Cleveland Ohio

The most unusual motorcycle season in history (for me.) Remember, this is NE Ohio. And in February, I had ridden my R100GS east of Pittsburgh so the dealer could apply his 'special touch' to the tune up and a few other things. No sooner had I walked into the shop, that I ran face to face with one really nice, low mileage K1 in blue and yellow.

I had some money from another bike sale burning a hole in my pocket, so the following weekend, I was back at the shop taking delivery of what had to be one of BMW's most unusual machines at the time. Rode it home to Cleveland, with my buddy following me in his vintage 1965 Pontiac Catalina two door hardtop. Quite a parade!

The point is ....... February was like June. This was probably the longest riding season ever for me.

But seriously -- if 'we' can get behind projects to bring oil and natural gas across the USA without America getting any of it, why can't 'we' build a pipeline system for domestic water distribution like the petroleum or 'lectric grids?

No, no, no! The states surrounding the Great Lakes have the water! I remember watching a PBS special about how to quench the thirst of the western states by piping water from the Great Lakes to the West. I loved the response from one of our G Lakes defenders. "Instead of a pipeline, lets send all of those that have moved to the SW a bus ticket, and suggest they come back home."

Texas could have a warmer and wetter than "normal" winter. Some parts of the state really need rain. We will see. I struggle with the possible weeks of overcast/rain weather here on the Gulf Coast. Drives me bonkers. Big system is winding up out of the Gulf of Mexico right now and headed out way. Could be pretty large buckets of the wet stuff pour down for a few days. We need it, it has been dry for quite a while. Several of my plants out back died when I was out of town for extended periods, and I duh-oh'd watering.

Sure hope El Nino lasts. In Edmonton, AB - today was +19C (66F), that's warmer than our normal being at 53° 33' 0" N it gets cool here in late September and often we have snow by the end of October. The "Great White North" may not be so cold & white this year

When Californians are ready to pay $2 a gallon for water, the pipeline will get built.

I can't recall such a beautiful and long fall and have ridden more this summer than most. The weekend looks to be great again and more riding is planned. This is the welcome side of global warming for us folks up north. There are very few major cities this far north anywhere in the world and we really enjoy our short sunny summers. But I think the down sides to this warmer weather is starting to become noticeable.
This September was the warmest ever recorded in Canada. October has turned out to be beautiful and very warm as well. Even in an area of North America with an abundance of natural water it has been a very dry summer. The glaciers in the coastal mountains of British Columbia receded more this summer than any time since records have been taken, and the reservoirs are down again. A couple weeks ago I rode through the coastal areas north of San Francisco, I was shocked by the straw brown landscape, nothing was green unless it was irrigated, no wonder the wild fires have been so intense in northern California. If the droughts that California have experienced are going to become the norm in more areas we are headed for some interesting times, including longer riding seasons.

It's global warming!!!

The snow caps are melting and the penguins are migrating to Russia. And now Russia won't give back our penguins, so now we have Global Warming AND a beef with Russia to worry about!

The end is obviously near and all this guy is worried about is his motorcycle season...

I have a good friend that lives in Phoenix and he puts and average of 40,000 miles a year on his bikes. All winter that is all I hear is how nice it is. So if I say I don't care I am hearing his voice in my head.
