Couple of things to check? Stelvio/Griso
« on: October 16, 2015, 06:32:26 PM »
Fitted some shorty levers to my Stelvio tonight.
Pretty straightforward, other than having to make a replacement pushrod for the Clutch!

Didn’t notice the locking Grub-screw under the accumulated Grease/dirt, so just ground out the locking adhesive, and unscrewed it.
The threads were chewed, so I machined up a new one from a 6mm Stainless Allen Screw.

While fitting the Brake lever, I found that the upper Throttle Cable was very close to getting caught behind the lug that operates the Brake Light Switch, when the Brake lever was fully back (i.e Brake hard on).

Not sure if it could actually get fully stuck behind it or not, but I Ty-Wrapped the Cable to the Loom just in case.
Could be nasty though if your Brake got stuck on!

Might be worth checking yours. Worth doing just to stop the Cable chafing on the Lug I reckon.

Another thing I found, was that the left Throttle adjuster fitting (below the Body) was rubbing on the Starter Motor Cover, at ¾ to full Throttle.
If the cover was damaged in any way, like if it had a crack there, it’s just about possible that the Throttle could jam wide open, not nice.

I heated the offending area with a Hot Air gun, and reshaped it so there’s now clearance.

Again, might be worth checking yours.

Not sure if these apply to the Griso also . . .

Hopefully the brake will lock up just before the the throttle jambs wide open.

A friend at the Deals Gap meet this spring dumped his Buell and broke his front brake lever.  Be bought a generic replacement at the local shop and thought all was well.  Little did he know that the lever was a slightly different shape, and didn't allow the master cylinder piston to fully retract.  This caused the piston to keep the bleed hole covered, not fully releasing the pressure in the system when the lever was released.

The next day he was riding and something caused the fluid in the system to warm up and expand.  Maybe the brake was dragging slightly from unreleased pressure, or maybe a temperature increase made it start dragging, but once the piston was dragging, things got worse fast.  Before he knew anything was wrong, the front wheel locked and made him crash again.  By now he had dented the gas tank and the frame,  was pretty sore, and had to stop riding for the week.

This taught me to be very sure that a replacement brake lever lets the piston fully retract and uncover the little bleed hole!

Ouch!
Can't imagine how pi**ed-off he must have been.

The heat generated by normal use would be enough to cause that scenario, and once it started, it would be effectively self generating, like thermal runaway in a Battery.

Hope he's back on it now . . .
