Breva Questions
« on: October 28, 2015, 02:26:09 AM »
We'll I've been putting some miles on my new to me Breva and a couple of things have come up that I'd appreciate the wisdom of the members here to advise on

Dash warnings
Its showing a DSB02 and a DSB05 warning in memory. I believe these warnings in memory in themselves aren't a big issue but will it only show active ones with the engine running?

Head light
Does the Breva headlight have a poor reputation or is mine just badly adjusted? Last nights ride in the dark was - shall we say - interesting

Snatchy Throttle
Under advise and since the bikes been stood for a while I've run a tank full of fuel with injector cleaner in it of but bike is still snatchy from the closed throttle pickup. If there are no ECU errors showing on the dash does the team think if just needs a damn fine coat of tuning

Dipstick
I can't get the dipstick unscrewed for fear of snapping it off when bike is hot. Can do it OK when cold. Is this normal?

Cheers

My headlight was not too helpful.

Zero snatchiness - smooth as silk from closed throttle.

I measure oil level cold or warm, not hot.  When the oil is clean and hot, I'm sometimes unsure of the reading on the dipstick so I wait until it's all settled down to the crankcase then check it.  i could be full of bunk, but that's what I do, including on the Breva and never had a problem.

Head light
There are definitely brighter, angle is very easy to adjust

Snatchy Throttle
Check the routing of the cable and tick over. Tick over should be 1050-1100rpm I think?

Dip stick
I can't get mine out when hot either. Glad it looks like it won't fall out. No problem when cold.

Head light
I thought mine was okay but I upgraded the bulb to an Osram H7 Rallye 65W bulb, It's a bit nicer now.

Snatchy Throttle
When new, I felt my throttle was snatchy at low rpms, I added an O2 Optimyzer and it cured that. BUT after reading some of Pete's warnings about them, I've removed it. I haven't had a chance to ride it since then. I'm getting the stuff together to use Guzzidiag to try to get the fueling dialed in.

Dip Stick
When very warm, I use a pair of pliers to turn the dipstick a little to get it started.

For the headlight: Yes if find that it does aim rather low. If you can't see then turn on your high beam and it should help, but I find it to be a bit dark even then. You can adjust the headlight angle with a wrench using the bolt on the left hand side of the bike (I think left IIRC) The combo of low and high puts out decent light but I've been thinking of getting HID in the high beam projector for lots of extra light. However, I've been warned not use your flash-to-pass because that kind of setup doesn't take well to the repeated on-off cycles. The adjusting screw move both high and low beams, I do wish that the beams had some overlap.

Throttle: I wouldn't call the throttle snatchy, but there is unavoidable issue of all the play in the drive line that comes with shaft drive. If you've rolled off the gas and then give it gas again without being very gentle, you'll get lash as the whole systems goes from negative to positive stress on the driveline. You can avoid this by using the clutch to re-engage the driveline softly. Otherwise I don't see the throttle as being snatchy. That said, I don't find the throttle on the big breva to be smooth, not when compared to say an Indian Scout which is smooth as silk from nearly 0 revs. In my experience, the B11 does not like to be ridden under 15 mph. Try cleaning your throttle bodies and see if there some buildup causing them to stick? The right one has that problem where it leaks oil out the bottom and if it's sat for a long time that could have turned to some nice varnish.

Cheers all  :thumb:

I need to make sure that the PO hasn't done anything strange with the suspension that makes the head light best suited for close inspection of worms, but failing that its getting "adjusted" within an inch of its life

Re the throttle its off to the garage for a tune up. Hopefully that will sort it before I try to ride it (but not drop it trying) up the ramp onto the ferry to Belgium on the 8th November
