Misalignment?
« on: September 10, 2022, 12:35:02 PM »
I am  servicing a November 1975 built Convert before returning it to use, I replaced the original converter and stamped flywheel with a Cal II unit, I also replaced the original gear box with a repaired unit that I had on the shelf, the converter is dialled in to .001 run out. The problem I have is when the gearbox is pulled up to the engine case the out put shaft on the gearbox becomes difficult to turn, back the nuts off and pull the gearbox back a MM or so and it frees up, I have considered maybe the input shaft is bottoming in the converter, but a glob of grease on the shaft doesn't indicate this, could the dowel pins be drilled out off kilter? Maybe this is what done a bunch of the early flywheels in?  Also, its a right bastard to get the gearbox back off of the dowels.   DonG

I know what you are going through, maybe pull the locate pins and see if anything changes, should center itself if that's it.

Yes, there is sometimes a mismatch between the engine and the transmission. The cure is a centering tool and doing something with the dowel’s. Smart guys will be along shortly….

I was thinking that I should pull a dowel or 2 to see if anything changed, I will try that and report back with the results. Thanks! DonG

WAGuessing…

Something compressing the clutch basket…
Shot bearing inside the trans…
One bearing not seated fully…
One wrong shim..

Something about the cal2 flywheel that you used instead of vert
They may not have dished the later flywheel as much as the convert? TC getting squeezed?

Good head scratcher…after doing that about a half dozen times it never happened to me

I'm not sure if this is related at all . But a few years ago I was assembling a 5 speed trans to an 850 motor ( with oil filter) .
These were all parts accumulated over the years , so no original match up parts at all . I found the same problem with tightening
the trans to the block caused the output very hard to turn . For reasons beyond me , the trans out put shaft protruded further
into the clutch housing than my other 850 Guzzi engines . Being in a rush , I simply ground the end of the clutch output shaft
until the problem was gone. Crude , yes , and not suggested , but mismatched parts can offer some strange problems . I wasn't
spending another penny on the bike and had another to ride .   Peter
