Time for fold down arm rests for Norge tail box
« on: November 03, 2015, 05:36:40 PM »
I've been told that if the Norge had some arm rests for the co-pilot that I'd realize some form of reward. I thought rather than just a tube of sorts going through the box with arm rests on either side that swing down, perhaps an additional support that folds down from underneath the arm rest to hit the top of the side bags making the arm rests solid feeling.

There is a back pad which means the cross support could be exterior to the box.

Any ideas?

I think you'll find that you need to fabricate something that's attached to the bike, rather than the top box.

Don't know about that, not much different than tail box for Hondas.

Just need some brackets. The tail box is wide enough.

With mods, those might even work. I'll see if I can find some at the local dealer to look at.

This would work too and mounted to the box lower, would come off when top box was removed.  Getting closer.

Instead of folding (pivoting) the arms could be telescoping. Could be as simple as fastening two pvc tubes to the top box sides (there is ample length there). After the pillion gets on they could extend the arms forward from the fore-aft fixed tube on the top box. Two smaller tubes on each side will prevent arm rotation (think over-under shotgun barrels) or an inner tube with pin riding in a bottom slot in the outer tube will do the same thing.

Now that might work. I like the telescoping idea. I have some aluminum rectanguar tubing of two sizes that wouldbtelwscope one inside the other. A decent bracket and voila.

Gonna try that, thanks so much. The flats of the rect tubing will be good for mounting a pad. Could use abs sheet with some foam on top. Hot diggity.

I think you're doing yourself a disservice Pilot...let me explain.

The only 2 places your woman's arms should be while riding are either around you or holding onto the bikes curved rear handles.  Giving her an arm rest as a 3rd option is going to remove all that loving you should be getting while riding.  I wouldn't do it!!

It sounds from his description there might be a strong incentive to provide the arms.

You might be able to tap the inner aluminum square tube enough to screw in a nylon tipped ball plunger so when the inner tube is fully extended the ball pops up to provide a small resistance to collapsing back into the outer tube. A good push back on the armrest should overcome the plunger ball and let the inner tube retract. Just a thought.

Shoot.... you could even build in a cup holder into the end of one arm.

Yes, the incentive makes this worthwhile

I'll give those ideas a shot, nice to have it better than just good enough. Pics as soon as I get a working setup made.

Micky

Those look good too just a little bulky and shiny for the Norge. They do look well made.

I see a revolving door situation, Norge Pilot.
After you install acceptable armrests and receive your 'reward', uninstall until further reward promises are made.....
