MOVIES THAT SCREW UP YOUR DRINKING
« on: December 01, 2015, 11:41:34 AM »
I think any or the following films would make anyone analyze their alcoholic beverage intake: "There Will Be Blood"; "Leaving Las Vegas"; "Once Were Warriors".

Are there any more out there?

That's an interesting question.  Alcohol is heavily glamorized in movies and tv, and I'm a drinker.  I think the movie 'flight' with Denzel Washington was good.

Days of Wine and Roses with Jack Lemmon. Now that's in black and white so it may be intolerable for some of you kids.

Is that one of those "talkies"?

Barfly though it doesn't come close to Bukowski's writing.

You Kill Me with Ben Kinglsey.

Arthur.

Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf.

Crazy Heart.

The Verdict, because they shot the bar scenes at one of my favorite watering (Godfather II also) holes and of course Paul Newman.

The Morning After.

"Flight" I forgot. "Days of Wine and Roses" is worth a re-viewing.  I've never seen "The Lost Weekend" so that's on a to rent list.

Hey, when I comes to drugging: "Train Spotting" and "Sid and Nancy" are dramatic.  Am I right?

Oh yeah.

Sid and Nancy has it's moments but I prefer Transpotting.

The LSD scene in Drugstore Cowboy pretty much nails it.

Panic in Needle Park

And Maria Full of Grace so you can see how that stuff gets to our shores.

Leaving Las Vegas was top of my list but it's been mentioned.

How about Animal House.

Fwiw, I gave it up 27 years ago.  That leaves food and sex, but they're essential.

Under the Volcano, John Huston's adaptation of Malcolm Lowry's novel staring Albert Finney: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Under_the_Volcano_(film)

Flann, an award-winning documentary about the great Irish writer Flann O'Brien (real name Brian O'Nolan), is painful to watch: https://vimeo.com/94852078 The opening sequence is from the only known filmed interview with O'Brien, during which he was pretty much out of it. The narrator is Brendan Gleeson: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brendan_Gleeson.

When NYPD Blue was running, whenever Diane Russell, played by Kim Delaney, was having her battle with alcohol, I'd pour myself a bourbon.

In Days of wine and roses, Jack lemon teaches a beautiful girl to become an alcoholic.
It was perhaps the first anti drinking movie to make it big.
I always preferred to watch Apocalypse Now with whisky within reach.

I vote "Animal House" with the parade at the end being farfetched.
From the Deep Deep South out in left field.  There are no stupid questions.  There are however stupid people asking questions.  🤣, this includes me.  😉 Hawaii.

Orf Topic. Anyone have tips regarding these Android TV boxes?

I dont have a TV (I heare they dont use vacuum tubes anymore) but I used to use a TV adapter for my multi media computer setup with a hi res 25" screen and super duper video card.

Unplugged the TV cable 3 years ago and havent missed it much, but would like to check out the other services and apps available elsewhere.

H oh kay.....

Movies and drinking: good/bad/neutral?

Reward for good behavior!
I have to say, as a young fellow growing up in TV land, the tv shows made fun of their versions. Clownish and funny and a little sad too.

When I was a little kid, I loved Frank Fontaine.  I thought he was hilarious.

I remember the movie CatBallou with Lee Marvin playing the part of an alcoholic gunslinger that used to be a legend and his famous drying out scene.
