Got Pulled Over Last Night
« on: December 09, 2015, 12:07:57 PM »
I was riding the EV to the local bike club Christmas Party.  The restaurant is about 25 miles from me on the west side of the city.  Anyway, it's dark, a little cool and the traffic is horrendous.  So I get off the highway and have to make a left turn across the highway and go two more blocks and take another left to the restaurant.  I'd say it's a quarter mile and 4 traffic lights.

So I just think, "screw it, I ain't waiting 20 minutes to go 3 blocks and get my ass run over trying."  So I cut lanes and ride in a center turn lane between the going and coming lanes, most of it is barred off with yellow lines.

Anyway, I get to the last light where I am turning into the road to the restaurant and behind me the LEO turns on his lights.  So he motions me to make the turn and pull over.  I turn and pull into the next drive.  As requested I give the young officer my Drivers Licence and Insurance Card,

I explain to him that I just felt unsafe and wanted to get out confined traffic area.  I said I know it's legal in California but might be a little sketchy here.  He looked at my info and said he could understand why it felt unsafe.  Then he said there was no way he couldn't pull me over with all those witnesses.  It would be a bad example.

So I try to BS with him some more and he tells me he has a call and has to go.  I continue to talk to him and he says that he really has to go.

Of course everyone at the Party saw it.

Good deal.       I was about to get a ticket for an illegal right turn once (didn't see a newly posted "no turn on red" sign) when the same thing happened... the cop's car squawked out of its speaker, and the cop said "gotta go", and took off in a cloud of dust and exhaust smoke.

Not even a written warning.

Man, he had to go.

Boy did I get the business at the Party.  And most of the folks drove their cars some of whom I passed in traffic.  Man, did they get a hoot.

Fun story - especially with all the motorcyclist friend witnesses.

And the moral of the story is: be nice to the officers, they are just trying to do their jobs.

Come to CA and we can split lanes all day long... front row of every traffic light.

not many showed up for BLHOT.  Hope they ain't all dyin' off.

No more than a dozen riders and  half dozen wives.   We used to get a good 30 plus.  Only myself and another rode.  But it was dark and cold and the traffic on Mustang Rd off I40 was freakin' ridiculous for a 6:30 meet up.

Maybe the cop ate at Chipotle and really had to go? Eat there and risk the screaming demons as backseat riders.

ALWAYS be nice to the LEO.  I think I am 50\50 on citations and I usually deserved them.

The only thing that has saved me the last 2 times I was stopped was being able to hand the officer a class A CDL(commercial drivers license). They always flip it over and see every possible endorsement, Haz Mat, doubles ,triples, tanker and of course MC. Stay cool, don't argue, but you dont have to kiss anybody's ass either. Don't lie (of course I know how fast I was going, I'm not a moron, I had 25 yrs riding experience on the day you were born). They usually say, "Well I know how much trouble a ticket can be for a CDL holder, so just take it easy and slow down". "Thank you officer, you have a nice day and stay safe". Whatever works.
