Rejetting VHB carbs on Eldorado for K&N filters
« on: December 15, 2015, 08:02:35 PM »
I am considering replacing the airbox on a '74 Eldorado with individual K&N air filters. I find the access quite tight an nearly impossible to get the 40 year old rubber boot to fit properly.

I'm a bit of a carb newbie. But from reading guzziology, I understand that I should be increasing the main jet about 10% for the added airlow. So change the stock 145 to 160.

I've read the paperwork from with the K&N filters. It mentions that the needle should be moved one notch richer for 1/4 to 3/4 throttle opening.

It also mentions that one may have to richer or leaner pilot jet depending on how much of a change occurs to the idle speed turn out.

I am assuming the K&N information is blanket covering all types of bike and carberators, and may not relate specifically to the eldorado and the VHB's.

So I am looking or information and opinions from those of you that have changed out to K&N filters.

In my experience, all that is required is to raise the needle one notch. Stock jetting otherwise.

The VHBs are limited in how much air they can flow so jetting them up is pretty much a waste of time.  Run it for a while and look at the plugs before you start messing with jets.

Don't toss the venturis, you can either machine down the outsides or use later ones if they don't fit your K&Ns.  These are 30s but the venturis fit the 29s:

Please read this and consider the test results before using K&N or other oiled media filters:

Despite all of K&N's very effective marketing, they just don't filter all that well and will cause unnecessary engine wear.
