Breva 1100 No start - some new info?
« on: December 16, 2015, 01:31:52 AM »
While mooching about the internet I  found some Guzzi info on the no start issue

This appears to be the standard rewiring of the yellow wire on the starter relay (pages 52-54)

https://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?depth=1&hl=en&prev=search&rurl=translate.google.co.uk&sl=fr&u=http://www.fichier-pdf.fr/2012/09/02/stage-guzzi/preview/page/52/&usg=ALkJrhhw8jjm14EHtw4Zx3wJkdS11InZPQ

This appears different in that they retro fit a diode and a capacitor

https://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?depth=1&hl=en&prev=search&rurl=translate.google.co.uk&sl=fr&u=http://www.fichier-pdf.fr/2012/09/02/stage-guzzi/preview/page/57/&usg=ALkJrhhfyP1ZfKWF2RTMr2PtyrAZXWqWfQ

I don't remember seeing that discussed anywhere before

Any thoughts - not least being where to you connect the 2 components too on the loom as it appears to be plug and play

IF I'm reading that correctly the capacitor/diode addition is to create a band aid which helps if the battery is a little low.

But the initial solution (the same of the MPH fix and the DIY fix we've talked about here) should be sufficient as long as you don't let your battery get to the point of discharge or needing to be replaced.

Intriguing isn't it as the indications are that the loom is already designed to accept this mod

If you look that Aprillia parts lists the capacitor & diode appear to be built in as standard - but I can't tell if they have the same function as here

I wonder what the threshold voltage is when the brain decides not to let you start the bike

Still - the standard fix is on my list for the winter

I can see a diode and capacitor in the feed to the ECU making a difference but only if the brain uses the Voltage while cranking. (bear in mind, I don't have a modern Guzzi, I'm going from what I've read)
Cranking can cause the Voltage to drop to 10V or less
Suppose the battery started out at 12.8
The capacitor would charge to 12.2 (12.8 - the diode forward bias)
The bike would start to crank pulling the Voltage down to 10 but for a split second the ECU would think the Voltage
is 12.2 and decide to fire the injectors and coils.

I note with interest how Guzzi have finally realized the relay supply is the root cause of failure to crank. Or have they?
They seem to be talking about the wire Cross sectional area

And they STILL DON'T show the solenoid coil correctly
IMHO this is why they don't understand the problem.

It appears:

This appears to be the standard rewiring of the yellow wire on the starter relay (pages 52-54)
https://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?depth=1&hl=en&prev=search&rurl=translate.google.co.uk&sl=fr&u=http://www.fichier-pdf.fr/2012/09/02/stage-guzzi/preview/page/52/&usg=ALkJrhhw8jjm14EHtw4Zx3wJkdS11InZPQ

This is discussing the standard "startus interuptus". A poor feed to the starter solenoid, meaning the solenoid may not get pulled in if wires and switches aren't in perfect condition.

This would appear to be a totally different situation, possibly where the ECU is not getting a clean enough power feed, so external filtering is added. But this won't fix 'startus interuptus'.

More on this from an Italian Guzzi forum

I had to laugh when I read Zardoz's post
I think he was bemoaning the fact his wife had twins, now he doesn't have any time to ride.
