So what IS a map?

No, this isn't about GPS usage!

Instead, it's about a recent article (http://www.cnn.com/2015/12/18/design/historys-most-revealing-maps/index.html) I saw that made me think about exactly what a map is, how it communicates and informs us, and about the inherent beauty of something that combines graphics and language, the abstract and the very real.
