Another Griso complaint: About that speedo sensor
« on: December 28, 2015, 10:31:51 PM »
Have not ridden my new-to-me '07 Griso in the rain until just recently when I got caught in a frog strangler.

Predictably the speedo sensor went "no mas" and refused to sense any speeds until it dried out some.

Is it worth replacing it with a new and improved model from AF1 or should I do it the Guzzi way and redneck a waterproofing solution.

If you ever feel like no one pays attention to you, try making a sandwich in front of your dog

Redneck it. Dry it out thoroughly and then seal it with silicone. If it does it again? Get a new one.

My 09 Stelvio had the not waterproofed sensor. I dicked around with it for a couple of years, and then just bit the bullet and bought the updated version and haven't had any issues since.

In case anyone is wondering...

From AF1 website:

M.I.U. INPUT DEVICE - 883768 (ex GU06765400)
(Inbound After January 4)
Price: $54.75

I will try sealant first.  It's on the shelf and is a "sunk cost" as my wife would say.

Wow they must have gone up.  I only remember paying $35 for mine early this year.  of course my memory is always suspect

I did the Silicon treatment and purchased a new speed sensor for my G11 early this year.  So far the new sensor has stayed in the new parts box and hasn't needed to be installed.  Still I don't ride in the rain if I can help it.

Also in that new spare parts box is a starter-fuel injection-headlight relay (they all use the same relay) along with an oil pressure sensor.  The oil pressure fault is my Gremlin.  I pulled the tank and squeezed the lousy connection last summer and it did the trick - mostly.  Now it's only every couple of months that I get an oil pressure warning on startup.  Doing the on-off, maybe roll, maybe shift gears has always cleared it.

I figure Guzzi Electrical is much like Alfa and Fiat Electrical.  If you have the spare part on hand the old part seems to keep working with an occasional wake up call just to let you know they're "Eyetalian"

I sealed mine about seven years ago and haven't thought about it since...
