Diagnostic Tool for the California 1400 Series - Found
« on: January 07, 2016, 09:20:35 AM »
Given the sparcity of Moto Guzzi Dealers (closest one for me is 140 miles) & Piaggo's reluctance to have you be able to do even a simple reset of the maintenance icon, I embarked on a long & extensive search for a diagnostic tool.  Most it seems address all other models of Moto Guizzi but not the 1400.  However,  I may have found an answer as just this morning I have been in contact with Techo Research (http://www.pgnstudio.com/techno_temp/index.php?pid=40) and they assured me that their Centurion-UE diagnostic machine will service the Moto Guzzi California 1400 series.  The cost is $1,398.  A bit steep for the individual, but.. as I said, most dealers are located far & few between, & factoring in just the cost of transporting your bike back & forth, as well as the down time… it might be something you want to look into.  If you are interested, be sure to have the Model number of you ECU handy, as they will be asking for that information in ascertaining if the machine will fulfill your needs.

The Centurion-UE’s Main Features are listed below

View real-time Engine Parameters data (RPM,Throttle Position Sensor, Battery voltage, Lambda etc.) & system information.
View & clear Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) from ECU (Engine Control Unit)
View & clear Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) from TSSM (Turn Signal/Security Mode)
Calibration settings such as: Idle Fuel Trim adjustment, Idle Adjustment
Reset TPS (Throttle Position Sensor), actuator, AFV (Air Fuel Value), maintenance light, and more
Perform Active Test  (Tachometer, Injectors, Coils, Purge Solenoid, Idle Speed Control and more)
Protocols Supported: ISO9141, KWP2000, J1850 (VPW), Blink codes and CAN
Data recording
Operates in 5 languages (English, Italian, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese)
English or Metric units
*NOTE: Not every Centurion package is inclusive of all product features. Some features might not be available; details vary by manufacturer and model. Please call for details.

The fact that Piaggio won't release the diagnostic code irks me considerably but apparently not doing so is a popular move with dealers who wish to charge a large sum of money for turning off an icon. I can't understand why as using a code and the dash is far quicker and easier than plugging in the useless PADS.

As for the centurion option their own blurb gives the game away. 'Not all features may be available in all products'. No, like being able to adjust the idle trim on a closed loop system..

I think that Guzzidiag will allow you to re-set the service icon and re-train the RBW system and it only costs a donation.

Unfortunately, Guzzidiag cannot reset the 1400 service icon yet (ver 0.47).  Hoping for a version that will soon .....

The things it can do you list here are generic and don't list service reset. I think guzzitech sells this, and if it could do the job why did he offer to pay guzzidiag if we could figure out the service reset?  If you buy it, get written that you can get a refund if it doesn't do the service reset. And let us know if it works. Just curious.

The point is: normally you connect the diagnostics to the ecu, we do that and can read a lot and reset some things in the ecu. But the service code memory is in the dash unit where we are not connected, so from the ecu we have to go through the CAN bus, to talk to the dashboard. And that communication is encrypted with a key unknown to us.
The service reset of the 5am is done in the dash direct with the service code provided. So no reset was needed in Guzzidiag.

The irritating thing is that the dash can do all the same functions as the earlier dashes but they just won't make the code readily available its madness. I was lucky enough to learn it but its one of those things that if it were to become public my life wouldn't be worth living.

Plan a trip to MI and try it before you buy it. Steep price to find out it doesn't reset the icon.  Maybe Todd at GuzziTeck knows, he sells them.

Sandros at TechnoResearch confirmed to me that the service reset was not available in the single user Alaris, which is the same as the Centurion-S.  He also confirmed that they haven't even looked into the possibility of providing this feature.
