I'm starting to think I should buy one of these just to piss of the faithful (and I don't mean the followers of the bar and shield).

Yeah.  Me, too...

Jonathan, the plane you are showing here is not a J1. Look here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junkers_J_1 . It was a J.1 (watch the dot, the plane: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junkers_J.I). The J1 (without dot) is the starting point you are thinking of, the plane that then generated F13, W33, W34, Ju 52 and the lot. And the J1 was fast for its time.

Regarding the bike: I don`t like it. But if it creates interest for the marque in a time people like big, weird, slow lumps of metal...

pandering to what ?

Emotion, nostalgia, teary eyed - maudlin rear-view of days gone by. Simple California made perfect sense to me.

Lineage is cool but plucking nostalgic heart strings like with "Vintage" or capitalizing off of something one has absolutely no right to as with MG and "Flying Fortress" always leaves me cold for its lack of substance.

And, as one who has bought and removed the goofy moniker and as one unlikely to spend future money on a glad-handily named bike, I'm right... from right here! :boozing:

Others wanna buy it because they like it, out of spite (that's funny - I'll show you by spending $14,000+ to make a point) or a sincere desire to pay homage to B-17s or their crews... have at it.

How about veering slightly from bombers into maritime patrol and give it the Nimrod handle?

Well, for one, me, I care as a potential consumer. I couldn't get that pandering: California Vintage offa my bike fast enough. If names didn't matter, nothing would be named and I wouldn't care to be the owner of a "Flying Fortress", "Fat Boy" or a "Nova" were I living in Mexico for that matter.

That looks like a modified Vulcan bomber. Is that where the design came from?

I've never made a buying decision based on the "name" of a bike, or car for that matter.  I buy the vehicle because I like and want it.  I had a California Vintage, and that's one of the more aptly named Guzzis.  So I'll say it again, who gives a flying.....fortress .
