I'm now an official member of "The Dead Tach Club..." (LOL)
« on: March 29, 2016, 08:16:35 AM »
Yesterday, after about a 50 mile ride on the ol' "Yellow Horse", (aka my 1998 Centauro GT with only 7500 miles on it...), the electronic tach DIED!!   That's nice....

Fortunately, one of the local Guzzi Geezers has a stash of new OEM tachs...so I guess I will barter to buy one from him.

Anyone else have any dead tach experience or advice?  Thanks in advance.

At some point, you may want to consider joining the Speedhut Gauge Club instead of the Dead Tach Club. I put those on my LeMans. I have already decided that when one of the Veglias on my Scura quits that I am not going to bother with fixing - just swap out for Speedhut.

Strangely enough, I have had good luck with the white face Veglias. JJ, just for grins make sure it has a good ground..from memory (a bad thing at my age) it's on one of the mounting studs.

Mine died shortly after buying the Centauro. Got a replacement from the dealer, one which was supposedly an improved design, that's been fine for 10+ years. Sent the bad one to Palo Alto speedometer for repair, after 3 unsuccessful tries they gave up and refunded my money (very friendly people to deal with).

To paraphrase, there are two kinds of Veglias. Those that have died and those that are about to die. I repaired mine once. Had it last another 6K miles then died again. Not worth the hassle to fix them. Just go third party.

If you hear a rattle inside the case, then the counter weight has fallen of the perch and can be epoxied back in position.  The hardest part of it is taking the bezel and glass to get inside.  Some have used a hose clamp, a filed down paint can opener and lots of patience (like I did).  Someone else cut it opene and glued (soldered, welded?) it back together.

If it's not rattling, then it might be the windings and that's much tougher fix.

I really didn't know you could find a replacement.  That's the simpe approach.

Another possibility is to send it to Joel Levine Speedometer repair in Georgia.  He fixed the speedo on my Sporty.

Yeah.  On the white-faced Veglias, the ground can go bad.  It was kind of common on the Quota 1100ES, for some reason.  Probably a similar issue for the Centauro.

Thanks for all the sage advice, as always...

1. Will check the ground as recommended.

2. Also, will a SpeedHut Tach fit exactly in the same housing to replace the Veglia?

Brother ! I got my membership in my first year of Bassa ownership - funny, my Eldo tach lasted a decade.

I just count the revs in my head.
That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.

There's nothing wrong with the old Veglias... no doubt a bean counter told Veglia they needed to cut cost by 50 lira on the white face ones.

I second the Speedhut option JJ. I put one on my Cal II auto that had an electronic veglia go out x2. much better option for about 150 bux! you can even design it to say Guzzi and have and eagle on the face.

The ones on my EV and Quota died early on.  Don't really need them though.

After trying to fix the one on my '97 Cali 1100i with no success.  I drew a smiley on a Post-it and wrote "What are you looking at?" under it.  Stuck that on the face of the tach.  I still had my Jackal at the time too.  So it didn't really bother me.
