2002 Stone Handlebars swap out for 2004 California Bars
« on: April 16, 2016, 10:41:48 PM »
After riding the recently acquired 2004 California EV for a few miles, I can tell immediately I need to swap the handlebars, the wrist angle is just too extreme and slightly twisted...that will be a problem for long rides.

Looks like the 2002 Stone handlebars are a bit flatter, less raked back and might do the trick...

Anyone have a lightly used set of bars, or can point me in the right direction...black or chrome is perfectly fine.

On an unrelated note, has anyone successfully installed a fuel gauge on the 2004 California...I'm not a big fan of the reserve light and would prefer to have some idea of what fuel level there is w/o cracking open the tank all the time, I know I can do the odometer reset and mental math just as easily, but it'd be nice to have the gauge too.

Also I might be taking off the brand new Shinko's that are on there and putting a different set of tires on once I get the bike back from MPH.  If anyone wants a new set for a reasonable price/shipping, let me know.

Many thanks!

I'm not sure that this is the information you're seeking, but...

I liked the feel of the swept back "Fat" bars on my pr of California Stone Touring models, but on longer rides my back did not.  I decided on a set of EMGO low flat track bars which have a good bit less "pull back" and are 7/8" to try on my 2003 model.  I used risers from a Jackal (Harper's has them) to adapt the thinner bars.  Works fine and my back is happy.  I prefer some forward lean, rather than to sit upright.

Photo below of my Vintage with California Stone bars:

The Stone bars are several inches narrower and yield a far more neutral wrist position. All cables, hoses and wires still route properly. These bars and a saddle with a slightly higher seating surface made a substantial difference in the bike's comfort...

Thank you Sheepdog...that's a nice setup!  The bike came with a Corbin seat which definitely seems taller than stock...now to find the Stone bars or others.  I saw another model of bars on a Cali special that also look great...will have to see how far a reach forward that would create...but both look more comfortable than the stock ones.

The never ending fun of personal modifications!!

Did the same swap with my CALVIN, I too recommend the switch to Stone bars.

I replaced the original bars on my 01 EV with the Emgo bars and am very happy with the results.
