T3 brake caliper bolt torque
« on: April 15, 2016, 03:42:30 PM »
I'd be grateful if someone could suggest the proper torque value for the caliper mounting bolts for the brembo calipers on my 1976 t3. I'm putting the front wheel back on after a tire change. I've got the torque values for everything else...

It looks like there are two different M10 x 1.5s: upper 9805 2545 torque = 25 ft/lbs and the lower 9805 4530 I can't find a spec for but must be around 30 ft/lbs. You might look up a generic torque value if you can't find it.

IIRC General torque settings.  Small bolts 20-25lbs.  Large bolts 30-35lbs.  Anyone can correct.  I go with one finger or two on the wrench.

As has been posted many times before, Greg Bender's site has a Moto Guzzi Torque Specifications Chart for V7 Sport, T, and T3. Factory service manuals usually have torque specs. Aftermarket manuals usually have torque specs.  Guessing, doing things by "feel", or thinking you might remember the torque, can result in injury or death.

I checked a Haynes manuel and it did not have any torque specs for these bolts.

I just looked through the SP/G5 shop manual, and I couldn't find it for those bolts specifically. Looked in all sections that had to do with calipers (brakes, tire removal). I had this same problem (not finding certain specs) when I restored my G5, so in those cases, I referred to the "Standard Settings" that are at the bottom of the torque settings page within the same shop manual (page 33 for the G5/SP manual).

So in this case, you would use the "Screws and Bolts dia 10mm ..... 4.5-5 kgm ( 33-37  ft/lbs)

I think I did 33 ft/lbs with a little locktite on mine.

The 10mm mentioned above is the threaded size of the bolt, not the wrench size. (Typically 17mm or 10mm allen if I remember correctly).

All those manuals mentioned in this thread can be found on Greg benders site:

Hope that helps, maybe someone else can confirm.

Chilton Motorcycle Repair Manual, 1976, covering models from the V700 through the T3, has these recommended torque values on page 1412:

Disc brake caliper mounts 28-32 ft lbs

Disc brake caliper bolts 28-32 ft lbs

The provenance is unclear since the T3. factory manual doesn't have it.

Groover's advice is sound, but now you've got a printed source.

Yes.  I have died many times on many Guzzis and other bikes.  I know a couple of other guys that wrench on their bikes and they have died many times too.
