2015 V7 possible purchase, what should I be looking for
« on: April 26, 2016, 12:24:24 PM »
I have an opportunity to buy one of the 2015 v7 Stone leftovers. had a chance to demo one last fall, like it a lot. The one that I'm interested in is the standard, cast wheel version, with the single throttle body.

For you folks who have them, and I know there are more than a few here, is there anything that I should be looking for, like having the re flash done at purchase etc?

I find it really handy to have a centerstand....whic h does not come on the bike.  See if the dealer will give you a deal on the stand and the European side stand that goes with it.  As for what to look for; get the latest flash, check the air pressure, check the oil, ride that sucker!

I have a 1TB 2014.

There was a new map available about a year ago that helps with cold starts.  I added Mistral exhausts and felt my bike still ran okay but opted to get a custom map done and my bike is even smoother and feels more responsive.  I am not sure I would pay for a custom map if not changing out the stock exhaust.

Many swear by the center stand.  At some point I will add that as well.

I only have 700 miles on mine but has been trouble free for me.

Just little things that the dealer may or factory may (or may not have taken care of):

* Is the clutch cable sitting on the powerhead (if so wire tie it off the head to prevent melting).

* Is the hose clamp for valve cover breather hose or spark plug wire rubbing on the tank, especially on the right side (if so turn/reposition it)

* Is the spark plug wire sitting on the head (it may melt the insulation eventually), if so reposition it/tie it etc.

* Are the tank mounting pucks (at the rubber mounts on either side of the frame under the tank) loose or coming loose. Some unthreaded and started to rub the tanks from underneath. Solution, pull tank back just far enough to access, remove bolts, coat with Loctite and reinstall.

I'm sure there are one or two other dumb things like this, but nothing that NEEDS to be checked before buying a new/leftover bike.

It might be worthwhile to make sure it has the most current map. On the 2013/14 it was #352BV738 That MAY be the same on the 2015, but I'm not positive. For some reason even though that map came out long before 2014, we've noticed that many 2014 models didn't come with it from the factory. It may be they never installed the newer map at the factory and expected dealers to do it on a case-by-case basis if there was a complaint. Some say it smooths out idle a bit and helps with cold start/stumbling.

EDIT - what dealer? Euro, FBF? someone else?

John,

I'm assuming Eurosports?  If so, see salesman named Rick.  I had a good experience with him 2 years ago this month (bought a '14 V7 Special).  He emailed me out of the blue last week checking on me and the bike.

I've added a sport fairing, Agostini pipes, ikon shocks, better seat, center stand/euro side stand, C-bow bags, and a few other things.  Only time I've been back to their shop was to get the updated map ($50).  Have them check and make sure it's installed before you leave.

You'll be happy with the bike!

Guys,

Wow, great info. that is exactly what I am looking for. Nothing that would nix buying it, just "stuff" to be aware of, and take care of. I'll ask about which map it has..

Yes, it's Euro in Coopersburg.  I've purchased accessories, parts and service from them, but never a bike.

Cam,

  What fairing did you get?

It's this Sport Fairing on Harper's site.  I tried to buy it from them, but they couldn't get it from their source in Italy at the time (2 years ago).  Scored a slightly used white one from someone here, and had it painted and striped to match.

We have two of them. A '15 Special and a '15 Stone.

Remove the canister. I find it causes starting issues.

Remove and locktite your gear shift lever.

Give the whole bike a once over, see if anything looks out of place, as some other posters mentioned.

Also, the Dart Flyscreen does a great job of taking the wind off your torso. Buffets just under the chin, and starts just at the shoulders. I find it's a must have for highway riding.

A 2015 model bike should have the latest map from the factory.

But, you could always make sure they hook it up during PDI and check.

Unfortunately, my selling dealer did not hook my 2014 up at PDI, so I had the latest map installed at 600 miles.

I'm skeptical about this because my test (temporarily clamping off the purging line) did nothing to help my starting issues.

Some of the 1TB V7 motors will stall or stumble if they don't warm up for a minute or two after a cold start.

Ironically it's worse in hot weather.

But if you're patient and let it idle for a minute then it's fine.

I'm guessing John's used to warming up carbed Guzzis, so that shouldn't be a big deal.  Start the V7, put on your jacket, ear plugs, helmet, gloves - do some car window flexing, jump on the bike and ride off.

My 2013 V7 only needs a minute or two and no problems at all.  The time it takes me to gear up, getting my glasses to fit under the helmet is all the stone needs.  I don't know if I got the new map at the first service but the bike runs like a champ.

:1: have the same fairing. Took it off for a week last season.... really missed it: won't be doing that again.

Wow, I would never take it off.  One - because it's such a pain in the balls to get back ON.  And two, I love it.

Toecutter mentioned the shift lever... follow that one up. I lost mine on a ride and had to use channel-locks to put it into 4th then used a pound of clutch to get moving for the 45 minute ride home. Eventually replaced stock linkage with Sato rearsets. I like the positioning much better.

Mine comes on and off in a flash.  I drilled holes in each side so I can use a long allen wrench to remove the headlight bolts, pop the light and undo everything else through the open front. The holes are 'plugged' with firewall grommets. But you are right... it only comes off if I work on the front suspension.
