tach for Jackal
« on: April 27, 2016, 11:45:01 AM »
I just picked up a Jackal for fix-up resell. It has a dual instrument dash with a big hole where the tach goes. Anyone have a white faced tach they 'd be willing to sell?
thanks,

I'd like to help, with a tach for a Jackal

my help would cause others to cackle

I'll hold my own council

lest others do pounce, well

No need to erect one's high hackle

Didn't realize Jackal's ever had a dual instrument cluster, thought it was always only the one. Same as the EV / bassa /aluminum?

like this?

Wonder if a PO didn't buy that dash with intentions of adding a tach themselves

I have one.  I'm not real confident about its accuracy.  I was having problems elsewhere that may have affected the tach readings, but I had a suspicion it was a bit unenthusiastic about accurate and timely reporting -- something I insist upon with my instruments.  PM me if you want the tach.

I replaced it with a Dakota Digital unit, which is digital (doh!) and only resolves three digits -- so 1500 rpm reads 150, etc.  The resolution was unexpected and being present in a $300 gauge pissed me off at first, but now that I'm used to it I'm used to it.  The Dakota Digital unit also incorporates shift alarms, turn signals and idiot lights in the clock, so it can be handy if you need extra dash indicators for anything.

Y'all are right, Jackal came w/single speedo. PO had mounted the EV dash, but tach must have been dead as wires are just taped off.

I wouldn't count on that unless you know something more about his having attempted to connect it. Looking at it as it sits, I'd assume he didn't get around to figuring out where to connect it.

Why not just get a single dash? I've already gotten one for when the tach on my Bassa dies (it now reads 2000 with the engine off, but seems ok when the engine is running!)

That must be Roger/Joe's Jackal. I talked with him a while back about it. I had looked into finding even a non- functioning tach to fill the hole, but then start seeing original single speedo dashes on Ebay. MG Cycle also sells a single instrument plate cheap, but you would need to do something about the idiot lights.

Hey Ron, you can buy a nice ,modern stepper motor tach from speedhut for about 150 bux. I put one on my Cal II, after  getting tired of the veglia electronic tachs going out. mine even says moto guzzi on the face.

Tach was an option when new, I ordered the dual dash when I bought mine.

Thanks to Rick for the heads-up on speedhut....Wow I'm impressed w/what they have to offer. Does the 3 3/8" size they list fit the holes in the various Guzzi dashes? On my EV, both the speedo & tach needles are badly faded and the one in the  second stock speedo I've installed (in about 60K miles) has started jumping around like the first one did before it went titsup.. The thought of changing out to a GPS speedo and a stepper motor tach is VERY appealing. Anyone else have experience w/the speedhut gages? They are obviously intended for custom cars, are they waterproof enough for bikes?

I recently installed a set of Speedhut gauges in a 96 Cali. I was able to adapt the units to the stock "cans" that come on the older styled Calis by using some 4" candy tins that I had laying around.  They are made of a very thin metal which can be cut with a razor knife.  I cut a hole in the lid that I installed the gauge through

and then cut the bottom out of the tin.  This "adapter" will slide into the stock cans with a little duct tape wrapped around it.  A small screw in the side of the stock can will keep it from wiggling out.

My problem with gps speedos is what happens in canyons, tunnels and bridges when the gps signal is interrupted.  Also, during desert storm (1), the US deliberately disrupted the gps satellite system so's nobody could use it but them.  More recently, N. Korea attempted to disable global gps (they only affected a few of their own fishing fleet, but their point was made).  So I'm a little wary of getting too technology dependent in areas where perfectly good alternatives exist.  ymmv.

I'm with RK on that.  I ordered the speedo that uses a mechanical sensor.  Lots of options out there to adapt commercial sensors or make your own using a reed switch.  Kiwi Roy has addressed that in older posts on this forum and over on the V11 forum.

Yes ,Ron, The 3 3/8 size fits the guzzi holes well, at least it did on my cal II dash. You can ask speedhut to waterproof the gauge, and they add some silicone when they seal the face. Ive never had any leakage in mine. I would not worry too much about the GPS thing, if GPS  satellites gets knocked out by terrorists or the north Koreans, we have alot  more to worry about than out Guzzi speedos not working !
