850t ignition switch update
« on: April 29, 2016, 11:01:54 PM »
So I need a new ignition switch for the restoration but am thrown on a couple things. As of the Zadi switch description on mgcycle: "Can be used as a replacement switch on V7 Sport, 750 S, and 850 T models with use of T3 type ignition switch housing 17736450. 4 terminal, 3 position. This is the current production switch with male spade terminals, original switches used female bullet conncetors, requiring a simple change of wire ends".

Is this as simple as getting this and the new housing and being plug and play? Or is my harness the old (bullet) and need to modify to adapt the new (spade)?

If THAT'S that case, how do I go about doing that? Do I pull off the old bullets and crimp on new spades, or order something from Greg Bender, orrrr...? You tell me.

It is worth noting that my original switch was gone before I even came across the bike, I have nothing in front of me for reference so please excuse the dumbassery

So the switch was already gone.  No big deal.  You probably wouldn't have liked it anyway.  If the wiring is butchered too, the decision has been made for you -- repair with the connector required.  But if the wiring and plugs/connectors are intact then you have to either replace your bullets with spades, or the switch's spades with bullets.  Also no big deal -- just decide which side you want to replace, count up the ends you need, grab your favorite crimper and go for it.  Half a dozen or fewer should take about 2 minutes or less to crimp.  If you want to get fancy buy a terminal block set and make them all into one plug.

Bullets are nice because you can scrape the corrosion off by twirling them in place.  Spades are nice because they're cheap and plentiful.  Making them all into one plug is nice on general principles.  Take the opportunity to add relays now if there's anything you want to run that way.

That's all I've got.

The Zadi was a drop in mechanical replacement on my T3. Didn't have to buy any thing but the switch.. I did have to change connectors on harness from female bullet to spade. I soldered these on for reliability.

Spades can be found (in spades) at almost any hardware store/truck stop/radio shack/builder supply.  You want ones with blue insulation for that job, and if you spot some where the spade metal is shrouded with plastic, that's even better.  Buy a box of 25 male and 25 female.  They're cheap and you'll use them if you've got them.
