Beetle Norge map for roller top end
« on: May 21, 2016, 08:37:08 AM »
Just getting ready to check my valve clearance & do TB balance and wondered if there was a new map out there for a Norge yet. I have a 2012 with a roller top end from the factory and have been running the F2-7286.2015.05.01 map with the clearance set at .006" & .008". I was considering changing to .004" and .006" but wasn't sure if I should do that without an updated map. Wondered what kind of clearance others are running.

Wasn't the last map for roller engines? Pretty sure that map was for 8V roller engines.

I ran the same map as you have, factory roller 2013. Is that not a map for the 8V roller Norge?

You might be right, I just seem to recall a post by Peter awhile back regarding rollerisation and valve clearance saying the maps would need to be updated. Maybe there's a difference between that & engines that came with rollers originally? My bike runs fine as is, I was just curious more than anything.

Are you still running the stock clearance?

One map to rule them all. It's for rollers.

There's a new map available. It's not free. Ask Jeff Olsen what he thinks if it.

I'll bite, Jeff, compared to F2-7286.2015.05.01, how does the newer map compare?

Without a comparison (in case you didn't have the map above) what do you think of it?

The new map is great! Smooth power everywhere and very little "backfiring" when decelerating with a closed throttle. I love it! Much better than the stock map.

Did you ever load the graciously provided free map for comparison? It would be interesting to know the differences if any.

No. It took me a while to figure out how to do this, so the only map I have ever installed is the "non-backfiring" one Beetle sent me. My only comparison is with the stock map that either came with the Norge or was installed by the dealer.

With Beetle's map, there is also much less bucking and lurching at low throttle settings in first gear. (Unfortunately, I need first gear; much of my commute is at a walking pace because I live in LA, er, the Portland area.)

If you're happy with the 7286 map - leave it. The 9049 map has a few changes to the fueling. I'm just not giving 8V maps away anymore.
