Help identifying engine vin on 850T
« on: May 21, 2016, 07:41:07 AM »
Hello all.  I'm new here and have recently purchased what I believe is an 850T.  I don't know for sure because the vin tag is missing.  Also the engine number is 21892.  That's it.  No stars and no VD # or anything. I've never seen an engine # like that and am wondering if the cases were replaced with new ones at some point. I will attempt to attach some photos.  Any help would be much appreciated.

yep, looks like an 850T.. you have a lot of work to do...

and that is the common engine number from the era. they don't always match the frame number either, did you get a title? new vin plates can be had. I'd try Harpers.

I did get a title that matches the motor.  Yes, it will be a large project.  I did get boxes of parts with it but will still need to acquire some.  So the engine number is normal?  I've just never seen another one like it.

Looks like it could be a re-stamp.

Anecdotal evidence here.  My 75 850t manfactured in oct 74 has matching five digit numbers (no letters) on engine and frame.  940XX. Bought it new from the dealer in '91

I've got a later 850-T with filter. Engine numbers and frame numbers match the tag on the frame. Engine number is C*097243*. Also after the DGM on the frame, I have #'s stamped DGM12xx OM

The title says its a 1971.  Maybe it is an Ambassador engine?  The bike came with the tank in the photo but it doesn't seem to fit properly.  The plot thickens. Looks like it could be a bitsa.

Its not an Ambassador engine.

My guess is that someone had a title for an Ambassador, ground the numbers off the 850T engine and put the Ambo numbers on there.

That tank is correct  for an 850-T/T-3, as is the frame. Nothing you have there dates back to 1971. Nothing is ambassador. You might have the wrong title.
