With my 2010 Classic, I seem to remember always starting with the fast idle & a little throttle in the early days. Never any real cold start problem (unlike the 1TB). After 15,000 km it settled down somewhat & after 30,000 km the fast idle was only occasionally used. After fitting the SSB Powersports lithium battery, the fast idle is never used. I still like to let it idle for a minute or two while putting on my helmet & gloves, but it doesn't really seem to need it. It is still on the original factory map, I believe. At 130,000 km still going strong.
