My 2012 Tenni showed similar wear at 10K. Other folks have had similar photo's at around 5K if memory serves.

If you get the bike (global use of the word "you" there) the first thing to do is get her rollerized.

Dusty,

We need some way of determining the engine is rollerized, genuine fix.  Then...you might be surprised.

I think the Tenni Griso is perhaps the most beautiful modern Guzzi ever made...

Agreed.  Nothing beats that green with the tan seat.  Classy as hell.

just got a NASTY text from the seller because i asked him for pics of the valve train...
he sent me a pic with the number on the engine block:
13370

so according to the previous posts, this bike was made with FLAT tappets....

correct?

Why not just offer him a price that would allow room for the tappet repair.  Obviously his reaction reveals that he was hoping people didn't get wind of the issue, but now that it's known, unless a sucker buys it, his only recourse is to sell it with a discount for the repair or keep it.  Either way...you still have a chance to score a very nice bike...if you want a Griso...

Based on the rude, almost maniacal, replies to my emails to his CL post this is not an individual with whom I'd want to have much interaction - nice bike or not.

If he's being a douche, we should ALL email him and ask if it's been rollerized.

Yea, I'm easily amused.

Simply told him his listing was being discussed here and asked if he could clarify what status of valve train was with the service report from Orlando or a pic of the rockers......went quickly downhill from there.  :boxing:

Look, nobody likes to think that they've bough anything with a problem, especially one that can have such catastrophic consequences as tappet failure on an 8V but unfortunately for those of us affected, (Remember, it cost me an entire engine!) you have two choices if you want to sell the bike.

1.) Accept that because your machine is a pre roller model, no matter how pretty it is, it is handicapped. Be honest with potential purchasers and be prepared to take it in the shorts because I'm afraid that is what is going to happen.

2.) Pretend the problem doesn't exist and carry on like a pork chop insulting all who might ask any questions regarding the status of the machine WRT the flat tappet problem.

#1 Makes you a reasonable human being and pragmatic realist. #2 Makes you a 24 carat phesterhead. The choice is yours.

If You want more money from the sale? Get it rollerised! it still won't command the money a bike with a roller motor from new will but it will add substantially to its resale worth. The other alternative is to rollerise it and keep it.

As long as its mileage is genuine then there is probably no reason to avoid it all together BUT....

The owner has shown himself to be less than pleasant so there is always the risk that he'd sell it and do something vindictive like put carborundum paste in the oil just to 'Show You'. Also you have to accept that it will need rollerising, the sooner the better. Budget $2K for that if its being done on your own dime.

As a data point I paid $7k for my 2011 Tenni with 8k on it this past Feb.  I was able to get a dealer to support the claim so the cam update was around $450.  The problem with this bike is, with that few  miles, it might now have enough wear to gamble on the dealer route so you would just figure on buying the $1k kit yourself.  Or, if it has a good service history, you could ride it a season and take a chance on an official campaign or something.

Either way $7500 plus do the work yourself is the top end that I would consider just to get the Tenni paint scheme.  There are holdover '15s out there for $11k out the door and used Black Devils in the 8k range.

For a really good wrench, the seller might not matter.  I've had to rely on the trustworthiness of the seller and haven't gone wrong in my bike purchases.  I would run for the hills but I'm not you.  If you're confident you can fix whatever else is not as described and can get it for a song then maybe go for it.  I wouldn't want to spend my short time on this earth dealing with people like that seller unless I couldn't avoid it.

Very well put Pete. As the owner of a rollerised 12' NTX this is just the way it is. Got over that a long time ago. Fortunately I love the bike and will be happy to keep it until I am no longer able to ride it (I am 66 and each year a lighter bike becomes more appealing.) or the engine fails. It was properly done but as Pete points out there is no guarantee that it will not still go south before its time. Either way I will cross that bridge when the time comes. In the mean time I will ride it as much as I can. One thing that is a bit of a silver lining, I can thrash the crap out of it with out any worry as the old girl is already tainted with a bad reputation!
