Contact Breaker? 850 T3
« on: June 13, 2016, 02:48:23 PM »
I'm in the process of changing the fuel line and notice what looks to be a ground wire (it's black) disconnected.  It's connected to the part in the photo.  Is this the contact breaker?  I tried finding where the ground wire should be attached but not sure.  It doesn't seem to be able to reach the frame.  Any help is appreciated.

The picture is meaningless as far as showing what you want us to see -- but it shows what appears to be the pigtail of a Dyna ignition module (that gray wire).  So you probably don't have breaker points in there.  But the black wire might be left over from the conversion.  Some folks don't have complete confidence in dyna ignitions and leave the points stuff in place for a quick return to stock.

When I install a Dyna I put the condenser wires back through the rubber on each side to make it waterproof(somewhat). That looks like what you have w/Dyna lead going in to dizzy.

I used to leave the condenser's attached to the distributer when I installed a Dyna so, I could drop in a contact plate with points by the side of the road if the Dyna fails. But, since I've never had one fail, except right out of the box one time, I remove the condensers. Your bike has a Dyna ignition so, you don't need the condensers, I can't tell if they are still mounted to the side of the distributor or not. In other words, don't worry about the black wires, you don't need them.

Really appreciate all the info. Always had vintage bikes, but other people worked on them.  Figured it's time for me to do more on my own and I have some time to do so.  My old CB750 had electronic ignition, but that was put on by the previous owner.  Much appreciated.

There's currently an odd setup on the bike now.  For example the kill switch is the start button.  I need to sort through it at some point and get the regular controls back.

IMHO motorcycle kill switches should be banned. Especially those from the mid to late 70s tonti frame Guzzis. If you are going for original in appearance, you can leave the switch and wires in tact at the handle bar but, bypass it in the headlight bucket. Or better yet, under the tank with solder and shrink tubing. On that bike, power to the coil travels from the ignition switch, into the headlight bucket, then to the switch and back through the 3 wire Molex connector then to the coil. Those switches are undependable at best and truly just a crappy design. Just my 2 pennys worth.
