Norge: Squealing Like a Stuck Pig
« on: June 07, 2016, 08:19:45 PM »
Well, almost...

As with VTwins' new 2014 Stelvio, my new 2014 Norge with 3,800 miles squeals now and then when I am in second or third gear, "rolling off the throttle, as up to a light in lower gears. It lasts long enough now, that I can tell pulling the clutch in stops it." See http://wildguzzi.com/forum/index.php?topic=83205.0.

Fortunately, my Norge does not squeal all the time, just occasionally, as when I am rolling up beside someone younger and prettier than me.

I know there is no pig in there, so what could it be?

(I have alerted my dealer, Moto International, so they know to be prepared for possible in-patient treatment when I return for my 6,200-mile service.)

Hey, there's a pig in there and it's trying to get out!!! There have been some bad ones, I had one the center cup retainer came unsprung on one side.

Tranies squeel w/low on fluid sometimes.

I was wondering about that. I can see no leaks. Perhaps it was fiddled with at the first service (unless trannies consume fluid). Perhaps it is the clutch, or second and third gears, or... Hmmm.

Definitely check the gearbox oil. It's not hard.

Thanks. Will do.

I love how definite the manual is: "The oil level is correct when it is close to the cap/dipstick opening." What could go wrong?

Mine does it too but it's not super loud. It only does it when I back off the throttle and usually just during the 1st 15 minutes or so of riding. When I first heard it I thought it was the alternator belt, but tightening & belt dress didn't get rid of it. To me it doesn't sound metallic, my other thought was some kind of vacuum leak but it has no effect on the way the engine runs so I guess that doesn't make a lot of sense. I have checked and changed gearbox oil several times with just a slight fuzz of metal on the drain plug since it began probably about 20,000 miles ago.  Unless it gets worse I have just chalked it up as yet another Guzzi idiosynchrocy & kept riding. Let me know if you have any insight.

I have had some "Sorting" issues with my 2011 Norge but knock on wood my tranny and drive train are as quiet as a church mouse on Christmas Eve.

Put bike on center stand. Take off the plastic if it's there. Drain tranny oil. Put drain plug back BEFORE next step. Use an oil container that has one of those clip-off nozzles so you can squirt the oil in by squeezing. Do that - it'll take about 500ml. When the oil starts to run back out over the threads, stop. Put the plug back in, and wipe up the extra from the side of the tranny. Put the plastic back on, and go riding. Simple.

Thanks! It does sound easy.

My Brothers Stelvio is doing it as well........... local Guzzi shop stated that it is caused by a metallic cone piece they said was located in the CARC.
Sounds like they have done others as well.............

From experience: You're probably going to need a breaker bar and a quality hardened steel allen socket to get the fill plug off. And... make sure that you can get it off before you empty the housing. I learned that one the hard way, mine was on there so tight from the factory that I swore I'd broken a tool when it finally came loose. I also had no car at the time so had I needed another tool to get it off, I would have been screwed.

And why was it called that, Mr. Trivia?

It was invented by Professor Cone, of course, as explained in the episode A Tale of Two Tails.

Hmmm, just think of all the money Piaggio could have saved by leaving the "cone piece" out..
I'm not buying that one.
