Electrical question
« on: June 27, 2016, 01:00:03 PM »
Trying to get my son's jackal started and I think it's an electrical issue.

The new fuel pump turns on and I hear a loud click from the relay. I swapped out the relay with a couple of others and I still hear the clicking noise.

I'm thinking a bad ground or weak battery, am I on the right track...any suggestions on what to check next?

Thanks
Steve

The loud clicking you hear is likely from the fuel tap and it's supposed to do that.

Is the starter motor engaging and turning the engine over ?

The starter does not turn over. I replaced the fuel pump and filter, before I did no noise from the pump.
thanks

When you say "the fuel pump turns on" is that right after the key is turned on?  Does it stop after a few seconds?  Does the pump come back on when the starter is activated?  If the pump comes on with the key and then off if you don't press the starter, that's normal.  The computer starts out assuming you are going to start the engine, if it doesn't see the signal from the cam sensor it decides that the engine is not turning, thus slightly less need for fuel, so it turns the pump off until it sees the cam signal.  (A lot of people think the pump-off has to do with fuel pressure, it doesn't the pressure regulator is purely mechanical and has no feedback to the computer.  The pump is only controlled by the computer, based on the cam signal telling the brain that the engine is turning.)  If the pump doesn't restart when you press the starter, that means the computer never sees the cam sensor signal so the wire could have worked loose or something in that path has gone bad.

Good luck!

Belay that last post, at least until you get the starter turning.  Did you have the wires disconnected from the starter?  If so, maybe something didn't get put back on correctly.  Is the loud click coming from under the seat (or where ever your relay block lives) or is it from the starter?  If it's in the vicinity of the starter, it will likely be either a low battery or a bad starter.  Look at battery voltage, it should be at least 12.6 volts with the key off.  Keep looking while you try to activate the starter, if it drops below 10 volts charge the battery and try again.  If still no start, there should be a quick connect terminal on the starter, pull the wire from that and connect a test light from the wire to ground, to take the place of the starter.  If the light comes on when you push the starter button, it's most likely a bad starter.  If no light, start working your way back upstream to find out where the signal is going away.

The loud clicking is from the relay. The pump noise is normal, at least that is the way my Stone sounds when I turn on the key. I may have dislodged a starter wire.  The previous owner made a mess of the electrical. I will check the battery voltage and the starter tonight.

Have you checked for power at the starter motor ? Also , check the contact at the ground lead on the starter .

Clean the battery posts and the point where the main ground connects to chassis, smear the connections with Vaseline.
Measure the battery Voltage while you are trying to turn over, right across the battery if it's not dropping down the battery is ok.

MAKE SURE IT'S IN NEUTRAL
Take a short wire and touch it from the large live terminal to the small spade connector on the solenoid if it turns over the battery and starter are fine. You will get quite a spark off the solenoid so be prepared for it and use a No 16 or something substantial.

The bike will suffer from Startus Interuptus because the starter relay is fed thru the ignition switch, it has to be clean or you need to do the fix.

This sketch shows the wiring around the side mounted relays

If the ignition switch is dirty the Voltage at the top of Horn relay or headlight relay will drop down to just a few Volts
when the start relay closes.

This one shows how I direct fed the start relay but it meant the headlight no longer went out while cranking.

There's a lot of different causes for failure to crank, can you give us some background, was it sitting for a long time?
