Actually he was a Earle Scruggs style picker. But he was mostly known for his unique singing voice, mostly done in a minor key.

And yes Hymes, banjo pickers are always either tuning or playing out of tune all the time

I don't think anyone really knows. Might be a banjo picker thing, keep everyone guessing by tuning between every song.
