I was looking for a new helmet. My Nolan N102 is wearing out. So I looked at a standard full face. Motorcylegear.com had some really good deals on HJC FG17, a very highly rated Snell approved bucket for cheap. My skull measures 23 5/8" which their chart said would be a Large. No go, had to send it back exchange for a XL, still too small, then got a 2XL, and it's still to tight in the forehead! Whats going on? I'm keeping the 2xl has if I have to pay to return it again I'll be losing enough cash to buy a new bike! I'm hoping the 2xl will wear in, but I'm not real optimistic.

So, is my deal I have an oval head or what?

Strange, Chad. I had that problem with a couple other brands, but found that an HJC CL-15 in XL fit me really well. I sure hope HJC hasn't changed their helmet shape on me! I was planning to stick with that brand.

Nolans have worked well for me. Last two times I shopped for helmets I tried FF HJCs and both times the HJCs would not come close to comfortably fitting my head. I have a HJC 3/4 which I rarely use but it fits great and comfortable. Don't know what to tell you.

I just got an HJC in large and it fits really well. My head is almost Charlie Brown round.

Hjc helmets fit my odd? head shape like a beanie. No mater how I force it down, it always works it's way back and up in a few minutes.. Old El cheapo zeus 508 fits like a glove. Just a roll of the dice, it seems, fitting different manufacturers helmets to ones head. Why won't some one build a helmet that is molded to an individuals head like hearing aids are. Is that too much to wish for?

I've found that different models of HJC fit differently. I fit an XL in the 3/4 helmet and a L in the Symax III. Symax needed some modifying of the foam in the forehead to fit me well.

Front to rear, I tend to queer the standard sizings. End up with quite a bit of roll by the time I match the pitch. Worst for me are classically "European" sizings.

Well I now know what is wrong with my head. A couple weeks ago they stuck my head in the magnetic donut
and looked inside. Among other comments they had this to say,
"2. Chronic vessel ischemic changes and mild generalized cerebral atrophy." Which I guess mean that my legs aren't the only thing I an losing the use of.
That makes it official. I am not all there any more.

I have an N-103 with the electronics in it. I recently replaced the interior in mine as it was really bad. Man, I didn't realize just how bad it was until I put in the replacement. It's like a new helmet once again. The lining and cheek pads came to just under 100 bucks. A lot less than replacing my entire helmet, especially since the electronics won't transfer into a newer Nolan model. CIMA International is the distributor for Nolan in the US and they are based in Chi Town.

If I have a problem with a helmet's fit, I just remove the interior and use a ball peen hammer on the pinch point(s). Usually works, definitely helps.

I don't know where to start with the question, but as far as the helmet goes go to webbikeworld.com. Click on helmets, find a helmet that you have owned that fit you. Look in that review to see what your head shape is. Go back to the list and find the review for the helmet you want to buy. If it has the same shape or close to it, then at least you're on the right track.

The styrofoam portion of the hemet offers protection by deforming (compressing) and distributing the force of an impact.

Using a hammer to pre-deform it is making that portion of it useless, as far as protection goes.

I am talking about the diameter of a quarter at best and the depression of maybe an 1/8" or less in an area that is quite thick. Some people shave this material off too, as another way to deal with a small pinch point. Substantially large areas, yeah I can see the problem.

First have to decide if you are dolichocephalic (long headed), mesaticephalic (moderate headed), or brachycephalic (short headed). Then shop for a manufacturer who caters to your particular needs.

Sizing seems to be primarilt done by head circumference. I replaced my Shoei RF1000 with a same size RF1100. The new helmet did not fit. Called Shoei tech support. They informed me that they changed the shape of the helmet circumference to better fit the average human head.

The 1100 ordered in a different size did fit better all around than the 1000. You can also swap some pads to customize the fit.

"Why should you replace your helmet every five years?

The five-year replacement recommendation is based on a consensus by both helmet manufacturers and the Snell Foundation. Glues, resins and other materials used in helmet production can affect liner materials. Hair oils, body fluids and cosmetics, as well as normal "wear and tear" all contribute to helmet degradation. Petroleum based products present in cleaners, paints, fuels and other commonly encountered materials may also degrade materials used in many helmets possibly degrading performance. Additionally, experience indicates there will be a noticeable improvement in the protective characteristic of helmets over a five-year period due to advances in materials, designs, production methods and the standards. Thus, the recommendation for five-year helmet replacement is a judgment call stemming from a prudent safety philosophy.

"I dropped my helmet! Do I have to go buy a new one?"

Generally the answer is probably not. Helmets are one-use items, but are quite durable otherwise, at least the ones we certify. Frequent dropping or spiking a helmet on the ground, or other hard surfaces may eventually degrade the helmet's performance. Similarly if the helmet falls to the ground at highway speeds unoccupied, the owner must be aware that some degradation may have occurred. In general, the real damage comes when the helmet contacts an object with a head inside. The Foundation recommends that if you are participating in an activity that requires that you wear a helmet, you avoid hitting stuff with your head. It can be difficult to readily determine if a helmet has been damaged, and the protective capabilities compromised without a thorough inspection by a trained professional. Some manufacturers may provide this service or direct you to these others that can perform these inspections. The Foundation recommends that if you suspect your helmet may be compromised, then replace it. If the helmet has been involved in an impact while in use, replace it."

I have found little consistency in sizing these days, even with the same brand. With the same brand name of helmet and in the same size but different models there is often a difference. Just go into a bike shop that has a large selection of models in one brand and try some on, they'll all fit differently. Buying gear online is something of a crap shoot these days.
