Need advice, my 93 Strada is putting out high voltage
« on: July 02, 2016, 05:47:43 PM »
Hi folks,
Most of the time, Guzzi's don't put out enough voltage.  After a full charge on my battery charger, and then running at 4K RPM, my strada is putting out 18 volts. I don't know if I trust my volt meter, but it has served me well for 35 years.  What are the likely culprits on a 93 Strada 1000?  A voltage regulator???? Any input is appreciated. The kind gent is picking it up tomorrow and I need to adjust my price accordingly if I cant fix it, if it is broken, BTW, it runs fantastic
Thank you,
Jon

get another volt meter before you fry the battery.. yes probably the regulator but the experts  should confirm that. I'm no expert.

Thanks Foto,
verified the meter on other vehicles, seems the Strada is high strung and putting out 17 - 18 volts, seems like a regulator to me, but I am not expert, heck, I'm not even a novice
Cheers,
Jon

I don't know that specific circuit, but check to make sure the regulator is well grounded, no corrosion on the ground connectors, etc..

I'm fairly familiar with that particular Strada. Normally, when voltage is too high it's because of a bad ground. I'm sure I put an external ground wire on it, but check. It should be on one of the regulator bolts and going to a bolt on the timing cover. If it's there, the regulator is toast. Sorry, the warranty ran out last week..

Chuck,
You still owe me a regulator when your Quota reg died years ago and I "loaned" you my Lemans regulator.  Give me a bit more info on what grounds to check, I am a Californian after all.  BTW, the wonder Bill Ross is going to take possession of your wonderful Strada as Bren is now disabled and it was our touring bike.  Hell, the thing still has Indiana gasoline in it and runs great    If you have any input on how to check out the problem, please PM me
Thanks my friend
Best to you and the missus

Chuck,
You know your guzzi's, I went out and loosened the bolts, rubbed them back and forth to get a good ground and all was good, perfect charging now. I will tidy it up, just wanted to check your input.  BTW, your ground wire is bit corroded, will replace it tonight. Bike runs great for 2 year and 1 year old gas and a bunch of sea foam.   Thanks much for your input!!!!
Cheers my friend!

Chuck,
Even with the old gas and seafoam, I took the Strada out for a ride, if you feed it too much clutch, it wheelies easily, never rode a round head that wheelied before.  The midrange is really solid, fast bike for sure.
Cheers,
Jon

Will do Chuck, he is a great guy and if he was not going to buy the Strada, I would have been bummed, I know it will go on to an even greater life, then I will buy it back
