Pilot Road 4 Trail for a 14 NTX.
« on: July 16, 2016, 11:48:56 AM »
I managed to get about 6000 miles out of the original Pirelli Scorpion Trail rear on my 14 Stelvio NTX.
I have no issues with the tyre but I'm considering the Michelin for the dual compound longevity. I've run the Pilot road 3 on Buells and they've been outstanding.
I'd appreciate any input. Cheers.

Also on a Stelvio NTX I've gotten:
8,000 miles on the Michelin pilot road 4 trail, and
9,000 miles on the Michelin pilot road 4.

I consider those results essentially the same.

Edit to add: My mileage with the oem Pirelli was also 6,000 miles, so you might assume your mileage with the pr4 series would also match mine.

Just remember, the PR4 Trail is a 90/10 at most - so while gravel and rough surfaces are possible, you may have less grip than with some other alternatives. If, on the other hand, your Stelvio is a two-wheeled version of a soccer mom SUV, then they'll be just fine!

Daniel, that's about what I was expecting/hoping, thanks.

IT Sec.
It's not so much that it's a "two wheeled soccer mom suv" as you put it, more the fact that I live in Quebec and have to run some distance to get to playtime roads, plus having riding friends all over the US means that the bike gets more slab mileage than I'd choose to do.
When I lived in France between the Jura mountains & the Alps my Buell Super TT wore front tyres triangular and they lasted no longer than rears, but that bike spent more time cranked over than upright.
I've even considered getting another, wider, rear hoop for darksiding but I'm not sure what boots are available.

I know the feeling - my V-Strom 1000 never got the unpaved mileage I'd planned when I bought it, but I loved it just the same and had a lot of fun when I did take it onto the rough stuff. I saw a study a year or so back that showed the most popular big dual-sports (the BMW GS) had about the same likelihood of going off-road as the typical SUV; while it wasn't definitive, it's certainly true that as much as we'd like to go exploring we just don't get the chance. I suspect a lot of ADV bike riders would be well-served with a tire less aggressive than they sometimes choose.

The PR4 Trail is the exact same as the "regular" PR4 but in trailie / ADV sizes.  It is not a 90/10 tire but a dual-compound ST tire, the update to the PR2 and PR3.

For a Stelvio, you have to choose the Trail to get the 19" front but you can pair that with either the regular or Trail rear.  The dual compounds are different (Medium/Hard/Medium vs. Soft/Medium/Soft) so look at Michelin's site for more details.

To complicate things, there is the GT version for heavier STs, not applicable to Stelvios.

Toma nova, thanks for the info and suggestion. I took a look at Michelin North America site and it recommends the pr4t for the ntx with anakee3 as a secondary option. Also read on the Michelin UK site that pr4t is a 100% road tyre.
From other reading it appears that pr4 and pr4t are as you say the same except for sizes but it's the pr4gt that has the harder compounds.
What are you running on your ntx?
So I'm still leaning toward the pr4t but now considering the anakee3 as well.

I've got the stock Scorpions on but they need to be replaced.  I'll go with a PR4T front and a regular PR4 rear.  I want the hard center compound of the regular rear since TX roads are flat and rough concrete.  I'm all ST and no ADV.

There is a fitment guide on the US Michelin site (108 page pdf) that shows the difference between regular, GT, and Trail.  The Trail front and rear are soft/medium/soft and the regular and GT are medium/hard/medium (with the GT having a stiffer sidewall).
