Wytheville/Charlotte locals?
« on: July 12, 2016, 05:29:05 PM »
I finish up my job in Wytheville tomorrow 20 minutes after the big brown truck shows up with the repair parts. So hoping to be riding the raTi  by noon. I need to fly out of Charlotte early Thursday morning for a few day job in Jilotepec Mexico then return to Charlotte to ride down to a job in North Charleston. So tomorrow, I may have enough time to avoid the slab to the Super 8 near the airport who charges a mere $3/day to leave my Guzzi in their lot!
Quick check was US21 into NC then NC18 to NC16 and then a few roads near the motel. Anything better? My time will be limited to 4 hours max!
Thanks!

You'll be getting out of the mountains before you get to Charlotte, but 21 to 18 to 16 is a good way, I've done it once, you may want to hit the circular Interstate once you get to Charlotte for best time to the airport, but it'll be 3-1/2 hours or so total so not too much time to spare with looking for other roads ... ?

Next time you're in the area sort of around Wytheville or Charlotte, I can make it my business to just sort of show up wherever you happen to be passing.

Starting Sunday, Fay and I are heading down to Eastern Kentucky for a "shamrock tour" centered around Williamsburg, KY.   That's where we ride down there, we stay in a motel, and take a day's ride to the North and back, and a day's ride to the East and back, and a day's ride to the South and back, and a day's ride to the West and back.   It's about 450 miles down there, so that's one day there and one day back.

We'll know Eastern Kentucky pretty well by the time we get done with 2000 miles of their roads in a week!

Sounds like your work takes you within 100 - 150 miles from here fairly often.    That's worth a quick run for me for some Pepsi and salted peanuts ...

Once you get out of the hills your choices get limited and 16 is about the best bet between the airport and Wilkesboro.  Me I just slab it to and from Wilkesboro and add more time in the hills.  You just have to time the Lake Norman traffic.

Give me more notice next time JB!

Whatever you do, stay off I-77 between I-85 and Mooresville (x36).  It's under destruction and it's a clusterf***.

Would personally avoid I77 altogether of late - the Lake Norman parking lot can and does occur just about any daylight hour (Teresa sat in traffic about an hour yesterday about 10AM). Take either 321 to I85 then over, or 16 down from Wilkesboro to Charlotte area (although 16 can get pretty congested too)

Have a good ride

Good point.  I went through there North on a Thursday morning and South on a Sunday afternoon a few weeks ago and had no problems.  I did check Waze before trying it though.

If it is lunch time I would take 221 and stop at Shatley Springs Inn and restaurant. Old timey eat all the fried chicken, ham and sides of everything with pie included. Fresh spring outside known for its great water.

It was all real nice until the heat came on! A school bus kind of ruined about 8 miles on NC18.
